Hi all.
Two questions.
1. Why are all the testers always so happy???
2. On a more serious note, car failed, when the dip or main beams are on and I indicate left or right the popup lights go up and down in time with the indicators, and when I press the light switch on the dash to bring the lights up they stay up and everything is ok. Then when I turn the lights off I have to press the switch on the dash again to bring the lights down. Has anyone come across this before?
Car is a 95 Mk I 1.8 S Special

Hi Pat, the switch in the middle sounds like its working as it should. The indicator problem sounds like a earth problem or a something else has gone wrong in your switch. I'd be tempted to take it apart and have a look if i was you see if you can see anything wrong.

Thanks for the prompt reply Ash,
Is the indicator switch the same on the 1.6 and the 1.8 as I have a spare 1.6 fixerrupper in the garage I could swop the parts from.

Hey Pat,
what an odd problem ! yes, sounds like an earth problem. You should check the wiring at the bulbs are all good, are not decayed or broken, and that the bulbs themselves are good. Maybe the loom at the pop-ups is damaged with water or with metal fatigue ?
I would pop the bulbs out one at a time and see it the problem still occurs, try and narrow it down.
The indicator switch is the same 1.6 to 1.8 but they did change shape at one point in their life. But the electrical connection should be the same.
Let me know if you need a wiring diagram for these - I think I have one somewhere

Thanks Frank,
Yes think I'll have to go through it one step at a time, have both the manuals so should be ok. Will go to the tech day on Sat. its a real head wrecker, time to get the multimeter out.
What about my first question?

It's the fumes I dunno - I have had MOTs done in Belfast (you sit in the car with the tester for half of it) and NCTs in Clondalkin, and in both cases the testers are 'ecstatic' about whatever car I have brought there. The MOT guys at Balmoral/Belfast, if you're there on a Saturday evening, demand that you do doughnuts in the carpark for them after they give the car a Pass. LOL

its probably a bad earth alright if two circuits are affected. Check all the lads said but also check earth straps from engine to body, battery to earth on body etc.
The perfection of a Car's beauty is that nothing should be there for beauty's sake.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
Got it sorted this evening, some plonker conected the alarm +12v onto the white cable with the red strip on the head light relay and no inline fuse either. So happy days now just have to put the dash back togeather tomorrow.
