i have loads of experience with gel batteries and the only way to charge them up is to ....totally discharge them and then a very very slow trickle charge.....1-2 amps is plenty of they will over heat.
The perfection of a Car's beauty is that nothing should be there for beauty's sake.

Lads,

http://www.tayna.co.uk/048-Numax-Car-Battery-P983.html

ordered this battery:-

Was delayed a bit with the snow - but just plopped it in connected the + and - fired her up and away she went. The battery is slightly taller than the panasonic gel battery that was in my '99 MKII - but I just bought a tall bolt in homebase and bingo - job done,

Great to be back on the road again - thanks to all

Thanks Spideog.

Used father-in-law's charger to give the battery some juice. Instead of the 1/2/3 amps recommended it delivers 3.8 amps so just charged it for a few hours. Car started, so I ran it up the M50. Seems OK at the moment but I fear I'll prob need a new battery nonetheless.

Looks like my Westco need to be replaced, only have it for 2 years and 2 months, I had it on a low trickle charge for 2 nights and nothing. Poor performance from a battery. I had the panasonic battery for years before I needed to replace it, it was probably the origional battery.

Are the batteries from Tayna the best option? I dont think I'll get the one from mx5 parts again.

Only had my Tanya a week, so apart from it being slightly taller so far so good and a great price too

Guys, I just ordered the Tayna battery as recommended - but now as I re-read the spec, I'm not sure that this is fume-free. It looks like an ordinary battery... can one of the Tayna owners remove my worries?

Thanks!

Hi Simon,
Yes, there are one(or two, can't remember) vent holes in the top like the original which you need to connect your vent hoses to, I had them connected using a small piece of hose (but need to revisit as they fell off again recently).

I bought the Westco battery for mine last year and there is a very clear warning that it should not be jump started. I ran mine dow by leaving lights on a while back and used an Optimate charger to condition and charge it. Took nearly 36 hours but it was perfect.

Oh drat -
- I just bought a new Westco battery.
- No jumpstarting? I must have missed that. Feck. I don't have a trickle charger and I don't want to spend any more on this saga!

Ah well.
