Roof clip question

Postby shenab » Mon, 16 Jul 2012 11:11 +0000

Hi all gurus of all thing 5 related

So, went to take the hard top off (finally I hear you say) a couple of weeks ago and discovered that the drivers side clip keeps popping open. Like it's not catching the thingy .. whatever its called :D

I adjusted the screwy nut thingy but it didn't make any difference. :D :D (I know I'm useless but I know you will all know what I mean)

I did notice that the cover for the screwy nut thingy had broken but I don't think that matters.

So, having a brain wave, I went to take the fittings from the hard top to move across but it uses a different bolt. It's a star type rather than standard philips and I don't have a big enough tool. I think I need a 35mm and the largest I have is 25mm.

So, can anyone assist me .. either in figuring out why the existing one keeps popping or can loan me the tool?

I am keen, dispite my recent breakin, to get them flamin hard top off at some stage, if only for the 8th of August run.

thanks peeps

Shena

Roof clip question

Postby landmarkjohn » Tue, 17 Jul 2012 12:09 +0000

When we got a new roof from Jack thingy in Wales he did a little mod on the clips which involved a pop rivet on each one. We had no problem with clips before or since and I think it was a preventetive action. Will post pic if reminded :-)

Shena, you around this weekend, I'll drop in. I think I have the nuts from the red mk1 ( remember that one?) I'll confirm later.

Hey Charged RS

Thanks a mil will def give this a go as I have the clip off the roof already.

Love the comment about doing the disassembly in a plastic bag. Reckon my crystal nail file will do the trick;)

Filing done and it definitely seemed to hold it in place before I put it back on the car but it still pops open.

So, my first run of the 'summer' and I'm doing it hard top on .. not a happy puppy tonight

Still will see some of you tomorrw evening and hopefully I wont feel cheated at having the roof on on the only sunny evening of the year.

PS John if you have the spare one I'll defintely consider the purchase .. ping me a price and we might be able to do a deal - thanks
