seized lower wish bone boltsHey all.. I'm trying to undo the 2 rear lower wish bone bolts on a mk1. It's the bolt by the hub. They are stuck solid. I have oiled the hell out of them beat the sh*t out of one of them to the point where I've ruined the bolt.. is it a case of just cutting them out. I heard they can be a bast**d.

Re: seized lower wish bone boltsHave you tried heating them? And for the ruined bolt it's get a vice grips with decent teeth into it to try turn it...then heat and try turn and keep repeating
Re: seized lower wish bone boltsHaven't tried heat.. I don't have a blowtorch thingy. I'll try a heat gun tomorrow.. cheers

Re: seized lower wish bone boltsHello Ray
I think the biggest problem is that they come through the bottom of the stub axle and are exposed to all the shit from the road , in the past I've cleaned as much of the rust from the exposed portion of the bolt as possible using hammer and chisel , rotating the bolt using a long 600 mm breaker bar( my very BEST friend ) then cleaning more , I would also recommand my old friend worth rust off , great stuff I think . The heat will work but you need a proper blow touch , something like what the Plummer uses and be carful not to melt the bush . Och the joys of restoration ! Brian ]96 na Merlot edition. sold

Re: seized lower wish bone boltsThanks for the advise Brian.. I did try scrapping some of that crap off.. I had a go at the second one yesterday but no joy. Gonna give it another go today and smack it with the big heavy hammer.

Re: seized lower wish bone boltsI had the same problem when I was doing my bushes last year it is a pig. lots of regular spraying didn't work hitting it didn't work. An impact driver didn't work. In the end it was a gas powered torch and a 4' scaffolding bar got it out.... for the record new bolts are £15 each from mazda, ask me how I know.....

Re: seized lower wish bone boltsThat's great news Ray
Make sure when your refitting the bolt to grease it and pack the exposed portion with grease as well , it helps keep the rust away .....big hammers , I live them ! Brian ]96 na Merlot edition. sold
