Hello MX-5 folk.

I bought my first MX-5 (a NB model Eunos) about 3 weeks ago. I don't know the underlying reason for its formation but there is mould on the interior of the roof. I have not noticed any leaks or dampness since I bought the car.

I'm looking for advice on how to remove it. Vanish was suggested by a relative. Does anyone have any helpful suggestions?

This is a common problem, loads of cures, I used warm soapy water with a dash of bleach, get one of those green pot scrubbers, and just scrub it off!

Thanks. Is this a reoccurring problem? How often do you find yourself having to remove mould?

Once was enough for me! It depends how damp the roof gets...

The car may have been parked up for a long time with the roof having been folded down while damp, hence the mould growth. Clean it off as suggested and there are some proprietary mould and mildew removers available in your local supermarket. Treat a small area first to make sure it's safe, then do the rest. Might be no harm to check the drainage holes and rain rail on the hood. Lift the parcel shelf carpet , and may be no harm to check under the floor carpet as well.
A good airing is always helpful so even if you have a hard top for Winter, give the car a day or two with soft top up every now and again just to blow off the dampness.

If there are signs of mould or dampness under the carpets then you need to tackle that as well. Let us know how you get on and someone is bound to steer you in the right direction

Thanks leamyj. Haven't been on the site for a couple of days so didn't notice your reply. Dettol/Dettox do a "Mould and Mildew Remover" but from what I've read it has a ton of bleach in it. I may be better off using something else - such as soapy water with a dash of bleach.

I'll have another look around the supermarket to see if there's any other products that might work well. I was disappointed that MX5parts.co.uk had no product for this specific task in their 'cleaning' section.
