electric window cable parts and replacement MK2

Bernie broke the window cable yesterday. NOT looking forward to this one!!

So, like the fella said "I'm not a gynaecologist but I'll have a look"...... so I took of the door panel, and the motor and there is a broken cable mashed around the drum.

I went to mx5parts.co.uk to source spares and it only seems to come up with MK1 window cable, I left a voicemail and plan to talk to somebody there on Tuesday after the Bank Holiday. In the meantime I said I will post here and see if anyone has experience of this job.

The reviews on mx5parts are quite scary, such as "I've been in engineering all my life and was baffled" and "after 5 hours....", another one said "ask someone who has done it before".

All tips on this one appreciated.

Hi john,

It not as difficult as it looks (but it is a bit tricky), get it all out of the door and on the floor/table and it'll make sense. Heres a step by step guide to fixing.
Looks like they are mk1 and mk2 specific, autolinkmx5 have a used complete mk2 mechanism here for 50stlg

Thanks for the kind words of encouragement Steve, I would agree "a little bit tricky" is a fair assessment of this task.

I got a new complete assembly (my research also suggested MK1 and MK2 specific with cables only available for MK1) from ebay user travelinlite10 for €111 delivered (part of this was £25 for courier delivery, negotiated down from £40).

It came with quite good intructions and colour illustrations which were a big help. Took about 4 hours but I should be able to cut that down to two on the next one :->> Two people is a big advantage I think, to hold the glass and for working with the membrane.

I think the part originated from www.wolfmiata.com who do retrofit electric window kits and central locking etc.

NOTE: you will get the black mastic holding on the membrane on your clothes.
