NCT Fail - Corroded Sill

Postby Amri » Sun, 18 Mar 2012 1:43 +0000

Hi all,

Just back from my NCT where I was informed that one of my rear sills was badly corroded, and needed welding.

I was just wondering how big a job this might be, and how much it might cost? Also, where would I need to go to have this done? It sounds expensive :(

My brother is a qualified welder, but is a fitter as opposed to a car mechanic, is this something he'd be able to do? I presume it's just the structure just needs to be strengthened?

Thanks a million for your advice,

P.S Lovely day today btw, should have taken the roof off :)

Your brother will be able to do it easily if he has access to a MIG or TIG welder. You will probably need to bring it to a body shop then to fill and spray it.

Hi

Unfortunately my brother only has access to one of those MIG welders in work, so not going to be possible for him to do it :(

Are there any recommended bodyshops in South Dublin where I could get a good price for the work, or do you know what ballpark figure to expect? I'm pregnant so wouldn't really be in a position to be sanding off rust or dealing with chemicals so would be better to get someone to do the whole shebang!!

Thanks again

Surprised to hear about the rust. Yours is a 2001? Is it a UK import? Paschal

I wouldn't be surprised if it is, I have one that's ex UK and it's in bits, as you know ,with the dreaded tin worm :(

Yup! It's a 2002 UK Import!

Husband brought it to a bodyshop in Walkinstown this morning for a quote - apparently only a 1-foot section on one side is affected and no preventative maintenance is required elsewhere. Fingers crossed they'll come back with something reasonable!

Lettuce know what they say - I am in the same boat with my Norn Iron car.
This started as a 1 inch hole surrounded by flakey paint. I pulled a huge section off with my hands, to reveal this horror underneath

OMG Frank! Thankfully mine is not quite that bad! :-O

They came back with a quote of 280 including VAT. They were talking about replacing a quarter panel and welding it in from there. How does that price sound?

We've dealt with this crowd before and they've done some great repair jobs for my MIL's car ...

Sounds really good, to be honest. And I presume they will match the paint and blend it in after the repair ?

I got a quote of 400 from a place in Maynooth run by some Russian dudes. They also required me to buy these repair panels from mx5parts.co.uk

They're not cheap. Both left and right sills are gone on my car, plus the wheel arch on the passenger side. The car spends 3 summer months with me in Dublin, and the rest of the time up North <--- and that's the problem, salty roads in Winter :-/

Oh cool! Well I can PM you their details if you like?

Yeah they said they were going to have to respray some of it alright - they did a similar respray job on the MIL's car and it was flawless ... so am reasonably confident! Just hard to know what is a fair price for this work really - don't mind paying the money but hate to think I'm being taken for a ride!

Will let you know how we get on next week with the repair!

Sounds reasonable. There is likely to be quite a number of hours work involved, so not a bad price.
