Small paint job...

I have a replacement front wing to fit - with a few small bits of rusty paintwork to fix first. The tricky bit is an obvious patch about as big as a 20c piece.

Am planning to start by scraping off all the loose paint, then painting the bare/rusty metal with hammerite anti-rust paint, then cover it with a few layers of my MX5 paint (touch-up tin or spray). The thing is, I don't know how to make the paint smooth & join it nicely to the existing paint.

Can any of you wise people make some suggestions? All gratefully received.

I think it is fairly hard to blend in a small area, normally a body shop would spray all the way to one of the cars lines (shut line on the door etc) Try a search on the net, sure there will be loads of tips on spraying.

Thanks Ash. Kinda wish I hadn't scraped the rust off now!

IS there anywhere that you can send small pieces to go get painted??? I have a headlamp cover to be painted and don't know where to get that done. Also how much would it be for a complete spray over the car? (Don't think I need one but might be nice to know.)

Just saw this thread now by gawd
No, touching up little paint jobs is easy, you just have to know how to do it.
Yeah get the touch up paint from Mx5Parts or somewhere.
I'm not going to do a full write up on it as it's better if you go 'learn' how to do it yourself, it's all online.
But just sand, prime, paint, THEN sand again with a high end wet paper, then get some blending compound and get that part matched up, regloss it all. Sorted.
There's a lot of cr@p in Ireland about spray painting and the cost is a bloody rip off..and the paint they use is SHlTE, it doesn't last at all
Just like the cowboy mechanics.
