HKS Bolt-on Turbo Kit for NA6CE (mk1, 1.6l, mx5) from 89/9

Postby Fast5 » Thu, 19 May 2011 10:53 +0000

HKS Bolt-on Turbo Kit for NA6CE for around €1800.

The kit is the last one to come from Japan. I purchased the kit a few years ago and was meaning to fit the kit to my car. Its high time to let someone else finally fit the kit to their car.

Its a HKS Super Turbo Racing Kit, complete with T25 60T Turbo. Exhaust manifold, air filter, extension kit, suction pipe, F-CON Mini, oil lines and gaskets.

Included in the arsenal to send smiles to the redline, is an intercooler complete with a fitting kit and a HKS style (not a HKS but a copy) dump valve to round off the whole experience of fitting a turbo kit.

The Bolt on kit as described to me increases the power by 40%, reliably running at 0.6 to 0.8 psi. The kit installed properly, with a few adjustments is able to achieve 240bhp. But am I only saying this, as I bought the kit and haven’t even taken it out its wrappers. So if anybody is up for the challenge to go into forced induction, this I think is the right stepping block.

The complete kit has being well looked after over the years and did not live out in a cold shed, hanging out with rusty spanners and oily rags, its lived a well and happy life indoors. And now is the time for it to experience the outside world and earn a living, sucking rabbits out of hedge rows.

Don't you really mean 6 - 8 PSI and not 0.6 - 0.8 PSI :D
Good luck with the sale dude !

Yes, you are correct. its 0.6-0.8 not 6 to 8.......

Well if an exhaust you want as well, then one shall be provided to sweeten the deal. I have one of the Mx5parts twin exit exhausts. and they do still sell a high flow exhaust downpipe. A turbo installed with the kit, will lower the loud exhaust noise as the turbo reduces the gas pressure to the exhaust system, as the turbo converts the pressure to power....
I am an amateur turbo enthusiast and have being since i was trying my best to get the best possible performance from one of my Renault's.

A piggy back ECU is provided and instructions to install everything with the kit. So that is done and done. As it stands, its a bolt-on kit and a good start at getting the best performance from your engine. Who knows, it maybe all that you need to do to get the best possible change in the way your car drives.

Hi,

Might be looking for a ECU, how hard is the HKS to install. I dont see a wiring harness so presume some wiring required. does it come with software for tuning?

thanks

Hi there Andrew,
Right the kit can be broken down to stages I guess. Starting first with the HKS kit, the hardware side of that should take a day to remove the existing parts and to fit the new bits(I did a dry run one day before and what caught me out was the O2 sensor and the oil pressure switch, getting the oil pressure switch off stopped me before from installing the kit).

The intercooler kit will take a day also, lots of cutting and cleaning and getting the pipes fitted, also include the amount of alterations needed if you have air-con in the car.

The piggyback ECU with the kit is another day to get right as one wrong move will cost you the cars ECU and not to forget adjusting the ignition timing to BTDC 10º ± 1º. The kit comes with a wiring harness to connect the F-con to the ECU coupler and the manual suggests splicing the wires with electro taps which are not included with the kit(I guess for legal reasons).

The piggyback F-con mini with the kit is described in the manual as just a fuel controller, all it does is lengthen the injectors pulse. So there is no software tuning to this.

I hope that answers your questions there.

Thanks
