replacement ignition barrell and wiring

Postby leamyj » Mon, 24 May 2010 1:52 +0000

I have a '93 mk1 s-spec, need to assess the engine but unable to start it because during an attempted robbery the culprits managed to destroy the workings of the ignition barrell. The key section is alright, it's the parts behind that which I need, up to and including the multi-pin socket. Also, this car was apparently factory-fitted with a "Tectus" immobiliser, I have the transponder..would there be some parts of this immobiliser system mounted in the area of the ignition barrell???
Just wondering if there's more missing from there than I'm aware of.

no way, sorry to hear that John!
Is your car manual or auto?

Are you getting dash lights when you turn the key?

If yes, check the start wire,
Disconnect battery, check for continuity between blk-blue wire at back of ignition and hot wire at alternator (double check batt is disconnected before doing this) blk-red at alternator. You might need your foot on the clutch for this.
If no luck, trace the blk-blu wire till you find the break.

John, is this a UK car ?

If so, the transponder reader is in a ring around the ignition switch, connecting to a box under the dash which itself connects to the ECU.

There will be a 'security' light on the dash in the middle of the rev-counter too
It's a small world after all. It's a small, small world

Sorry, shoulda explained..it's the ex-German model that was sold on the "for sale " section last week, it's a manual 1.6 mk1 '93.
I want to get the engine running before deciding the next move. The steering lock was busted too so I'm probably gonna have to remove the whole steering column to take the remnants out. Was looking in the manual and they have a section on this, but unless I get a complete harness from the Ignition barrell or hot-wire the whole thing, I wont know how she's running..maybe I should try the hot-wire thing since I have the transponder.

After reading this post I went to the car to have a look. There are two cables coming from the barrell (near the key entry)to a black connector block, my problem now is what the hell does this connect to?? There is also evidence of something having been earthed to a bolt on the steering lock assembly..it may be that this "box under the dash" mentioned above was forcibly removed?? . there currently is no battery connected to the car, so can't say if there is a "security light" on the dash, but there is a stand alone led on a small plinth fitted to the centre console, if you get my meaning. I will trace the cable from this as soon as possible.
Assuming the immobiliser has been destroyed, is it much of a job to re-route the necessary wiring, how different would the circuits be in comparison to my '91 eunos?? Would it make sense to just use the '91 as a reference in trying to reconstruct the whole shebang?? What's the lotto numbers for Wednesday night??
What's the meaning of life??Why am I asking stupid questions??

yeah, more or less the same, see wiring diagrams below. I'd take out the immobiliser for now too.
