Wanted: mk2 1.8

Postby Col200sx » Wed, 23 Jan 2019 10:40 +0000

Hi folks, new member here from Galway.

I'm looking for an MX5 mk2 1.8, 2003 year max, but may consider a 1.6 and a mk1.

Anything good out there for sale?

Welcome to the forum!
Are you looking for a fixer-upper or as good as you can find?

Thanks I'll check out that forum for issues.

No not mad to consider a 1.6... I'd recommend driving both before you buy.

I cannot speak on Mk2's as I have never owned one. Regarding the Mk1's, the different between the 115 bhp 1.6 and the 130 bhp 1.8 is not as big as you think. The 1.8 feels slightly torquier but the 1.6 revs more feely. The 1.6 is slightly lighter than the 1.8 so it helps to close the gap. Both are fine cars and I would advise on buying on condition rather than which engine. Avoid the later 90 bhp 1.6.

Thanks for that, some good info there for me.

I would love a 1.8 mk2, but this would just he a weekend car woth very limited mileage done during the year. So wondering if a 1.6 wiuld suffice.

I have driven a JDM 1.8 with 6 speed box and loved it, but not had a spin in a 1.6 yet.

I forgot to mention also, if you are hellbent on buying a Mk2 or NB, then be sure to do your homework on their inherent rust issues. They seem to suffer far worse than Mk1's and their chassis rails can hide severe horrors. An original Irish car will fare better than a UK import in this regard. A JDM car that has come directly to Ireland should be okay if looked after.

I'm in Galway and I have a 98 1.8 6-speed JDM NB RS with 170k km. Its a metallic gold/bronze colour with a matching hard top, all the RS bits (Bilsteins, F+R braces, Nardi wheel etc) and there is no rust on it - it has lived in a heated garage since coming into the country, I am the first Irish owner. The tax is just out but it is NCT'd until Aug 2019 and needs nothing. PM me a number and I'll WhatsApp some pics if you are interested - I wasn't going to sell it until April/May but I just bought a motorbike and my arm can be twisted...

Heres a link to a post with an old pic of it - the roof isn't on in this pic but the car hasn't changed much since then. viewtopic.php?f=9&t=6650&p=53691#p53691

Tried to PM you David, but for some reason the forum doesn't allow me (despite being a registered user since 2014).
