Hi guys, new member here from Kerry
Looking for an early year 1.6 MK1. Pre 92 for insurance reasons!
Something with no rust issues and I don't mind traveling for it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. They seem to be impossible to find!

Why pre 92 for insurance ? Most are accepted as classics once 20 years old i.e. 1999 or older.

I'm 26 and carol Nash is the only insurance company that would quote me and was told the closer the car was to 30 years old the cheaper the insurance would be.
On a 92 I've been quoted 530 for the year which I don't mind really because I actually was able to get a quote!
A 93 would probably be ok I just wanna keep it as old as I can!

Ah ok, that makes sense in that case. Just be aware that models earlier than '92 can have potential crankshaft keyway issues. Not a deal breaker but just be aware of it. Real early models, such as 1990, are hard to find for sale these days. (I won't mention 1989 as these are like hen's teeth !!).
If I remember correctly, there's a red 1990 MX5 for sale on Donedeal.

Ya I've messaged the 2 on done deal. Can't get up to see one until friday so hopefully one of them will be suitable. The v spec one for 2k has some rust on the arches but seemingly a straight car from what I was told. is it worth it for 2k? Any idea what kind of money would arch repair cost? I have around 3.5k to work with altogether so would it be worth the risk or try to buy something rust free. Thanks for the advice too. Much appreciated.

If there's rust on the arches, have a close look at the sills too!

The V-Spec, despite being a Japanese import originally, could still have come via the UK. As Steve pointed, check the sills carefully. The arch repair would be hard to guess as different body shops carge different rates and the standard of work can vary too. Unfortu ately, these cars being the age that they are, are very much prone to rust. But at least they are a bit more resillient than the later Mk2's !
One way to look at it is that, once the rust repairs are done, they are done and you can forget about them. (Assuming that the job has been done well).
Also, don't pay extra because because it's a V-Spec. Sure, they have some nice extras such leather and the Nardi bits, but buy on the condition of the car rather than spec.

There's a 93 for sale on the IREmx5 Facebook page. She's in good condition, body work and paint are not amazing but it's been stripped coated and painted underneath. So according to the owner she's completely rust free and has never been welded or repaired.
It's a bit out of my budget but I could stretch a bit maybe. What kind of money would you think that would be worth in your opinions. Is 4k plus mad? Or is it worth that?

That link wouldn't open for me. However, €4k + is strong money for a Mk1 here in Ireland. For that money, I would want car that that has very good paint and bodywork as well as everything else. From your description I think it sounds like a lot for it.

Just going to have to hold off until something comes up I guess! Getting hard to find a clean mk1 for sale where they aren't looking for silly money!

I agree, they are getting harder to find for the right money. And the values are going up slowly. Not so long ago, they could have been bought cheaply enough for small money. I suspect the numbers of early cars on the road may have dwindled slightly due rust and accidental write-off's by now which doesn't help for those looking for them. Keep doing your research and keep an eye on the classifieds - you will find what's right for you eventually !

Ya thanks.
On another topic, what's the story with modifications on a classic policy? Do people just not tell them or what because carol Nash has told me that any modifications and they won't insure the car?
And I'm not talking about turbos and that either. Like a splitter and skirts or a body kit and they refuse a quote?
