I'm driving tomorrow from Dublin to Clifden but was thinking taking a "scenic" route as much as possible. Time is not an issue so 2 boring hours on the motorway and then up from Galway (done that one already) vs half a day of some scenic routes with stopping here and there would be a preferred option. Any recommendations? Was looking maybe to go to Athlone and then get off the motorway and head towards Westport and then down to Clifden. Any interesting and nice roads to take along the route? Btw, doesn't have to be from Athlone on, any suggestion welcome, places to stop, see. I'm planning to make a day trip out of this.

If you are coming down from Westport, be sure drive down to Leenane via Louisberg and Delphi.

Thanks! This looks pretty interesting and I might give it a go on a slow weekend. Any other routes like that would be good as it's much more interesting than random sightseeing.
