K & N

Postby Pete JB » Thu, 04 Jun 2009 10:39 +0000

Hi Guys (and gals)

I was thinking about getting a K&N filter for my 1999 Mk2, what experiences do you have / what benefits have you experienced with them. Any advice would be cool before I start spending my hard earned.

Cheers,
Pete

Hey Pete, I got one from Ash.............
 Now I know why they say Zoooom Zooooom!
Made a huge difference to my car (1990) and sounds excellent!
Not boy racer, but a nice growl!
Seems so far to be giving me way better performance, and fuel efficiency has not been effected.

Pete,
I've been toying with the same notion and found this on e-bay.;
K&N 57i INDUCTION KIT FOR MAZDA MX5 Mk2 1.6 1998-2005
Item number: 280316417579
However, lots of other bits and pieces to do first.
Roll bars - arrived today
Sills - awaiting delivery
Hard-top cover - awaiting delivery
Tonneau - awaiting delivery
All found on e-bay
The car came with a Gemini 7200 Alarm fitted but without a remote so I'm not sure if the alaem works and if it does whether I can find a remote. I also need to get some work done on the alloys but have been given a price of €400, by Collins engineering in Bray, for refurb - hoped I'd get them done for a lot less. So as you can see I've enough to be going on with for a while but let me know how you get on, if you buy the K&N.

Have you tried these guys up north for your wheels? I remeber an old boss of mine using them Years ago. Not too expensive then. Maybe worth asking

pete,

there is argument out there as to the gains from a K&N, if any. If the filter is relocated away fromt the mainfold or you use heat sheilding you may get some modest gains (2-5bhp) but its more looks and induction noise, which is great in itself and adds to the experience. If you have done other work such as new manifold exhaust etc then you may see more.

Cheers for all the info folks, think it's time to get the spanners out. Just spent all my money on new rubber though :D Why is it that garages inflate your tyres to 35psi, muppets!!!!

hought I'd bought dud tyres until I thought to check the pressures.

Spoke to Alloy Wheels, Lisburn and they are quoting £51.75 per wheel, up to 16", inclusive of VAT and they take three days to complete. A hell of a lot cheaper than the €400 quoted by Collins Engineering in Bray.
