We Fri 7th was a cracker. Car was flying again, but my brakes needed new fluid but I only noticed it on track on the day. I might install braided lines and bigger rear discs as this is the weak point in the car at present. still managed a few sub 2.04 laps despite the brakes though.

Here's a few laps chasing a type R that couldn't accept a MX5 was faster, but had to in the end!!

As above, I put in 1.8 rear brakes last sat. The old yellow stuffs were down to the metal which was probably the main cause of the bad brakes. I still think I will install the braided lines before the next track day but brakes are way better now.

Braided lines went in today, not as easy as I thought. You defo need a no. 10 flare nut spanner. Went out to test the brakes later and they feel a little bit better. New Pads time.

Finally sorted my water temp guage, which after flickering on/off at operating temp eventually stopped working.

First up I changed the temp sensor at he back of the head, bi*ch of awkward position. No joy.
Then I changed the gauge in my dash, still no joy.
Tried changing the dash thinking the printed board on the back was faulty. No joy.

Today I ran a temp cable from the temp sensor to the terminal at the back of the dash. Success. I then fan a permanent cable through the firewall. Saved me buying and installing a new gauge on the dash.

Just need to fix the pinhole in the manifold now.

Quick update

Did the Octane track day on Friday, very hot day so lucky I did some mods.

Installed new aluminium rad and new digital oil temp guage (could not see the old one when top is down and sunny) Result, no overheating on the hottest track day i have done so far. Max oil temp 96. Job done.

I installed new Carbon Lorraine front pads the last trackday and yellows in the rear. I still was not happy with the pedal feel. It had too much free play in first bit of travel. I was going to change the master cylinder when I found a guide on net how to adjust the pedal under the dash. It was very awkward to get at, but result was no slack. Tested it and it felt great for 1km, then brakes started binding. Backed it off a bit and its grand now. All it involves is loosening the lock nut on the shaft that touched the pedal, winding the shaft closes to the pedal (threading shaft) and locking the nut again.

After I installed the new rad, I noticed I was using coolant and only when it was driven. Nothing leaking on drive. No oil in coolant but suspected the head gasket. I was just about to do a compression test when after a road spin I came home checked coolant (expansion bottle empty) and then heard a hissing noise. The higher pressure rad cap had caused a pinhole leak to squirt water on the exhaust, where it evaporated before I could find the leak. €10 hose is way easier/cheaper than a head gasket too.Happy days.

Overall the R888's are nearly wore out but car went really well in the hot conditions where lots of cars suffered. Here's a little video chasing a sorted VX220. The traffic helped offset the extra passenger weight.

A quick update.

I did a trackday in Kirki a few weeks ago and last Friday did OTD14. I drove the wheels off it all day and had a blast. Its now on its 2nd day with Federal RSr's again and Carbontech XP10 rear pads. The pads are really good. Still managed to overheat the Carbon Lorraines RC5's on the front and am thinking of changing the front to wilwood calipers and discs.

Here's a bit of action from the day. Features to fabulous Ferrari (9,30), Awesome AMG (7.50), Crazy Corrado (6.53), Cool Civic type R (with loads of horses I suspect) Cool Cayman (4.30), MX5 RS (Piers) White Celica, E36 M3 race car (14.30), Pedro (17.40), Various Fiestas and a few skids for good measure. There is a nice lift off to drift slide at 8.08

In the last session the engine started to misfire and I thought I had finally killed it. I did a compression test and all was good. Chanced my arm and changed the plugs. Test drive result was same, still missing. Then I changed the COP's back to standard coils. SORTED!! Dodged another bullet there.

I'm going to get another sparco and belts for the passengers who are having a hard time staying put on track.

Cheers Steve

I got a lovely lift off over steer at 8.05 and caught it with the throttle. I even made the apex of the corner. Big smiles were had.

Decided to bite the bullet and get proper brakes. Should have this setup fitted in a few weeks.
