Sean. The perfection of a Car's beauty is that nothing should be there for beauty's sake.
Re: The Winter Project
Be nice. That would be too diffcult, i'll just get my own.
Re: The Winter ProjectE bamus papa we have white smoke - Good on ye Ivan
Re: The Winter ProjectWay to go Ivan
What's next??
Re: The Winter Projectnice one Ivan, looking back ,was it an OK job over all?
Like would you do it again?
Re: The Winter Project
Yeah it was a simple enough job, learned alot and loved every minuite of it. I'd do it again no problem, next time i'll put the 3.6 turbo engine back in . I'll keep my eye out for one with the engine gone bang. A new engine is 12grand!! I think i could fix one for a lot less. I've still afew bits i need to do to get it on the road.
Re: The Winter ProjectNice one!
How often do the engines go bang? Which bit fails?
Re: The Winter Project
They say about 3% to 7% of the M9620 engine goes bang. It's more likely to be a low mileage car thats not used. It's the intermediate shaft that goes on them, it connects all the timing chains. Oil leaks out the seal, shaft bearing no oil, crunch. I've now fitted an upgraded seal
Re: The Winter ProjectNow Ivan, the million dollar question.........
Were there any parts left over when you finally got the engine back in place?? Happens me all the time John
Re: The Winter Project
No bits left over, they where all labled and boxed when taking them off. Alot of bolts and bits where replaced
Re: The Winter ProjectNice one Ivan. That was a fair job to take on.
Not quite a full winter project though. I was looking forward to reading about it over Christmas. Now I have nothing
Re: The Winter Project
It's that % over the production allright, but it's higher in certain years.......up to 99's (3.4's) and it really is hit & miss..........I'd have the heebies, or, buy one and ASSUME it'll fubar...... Ivan - I salute you - that's a fine job. Mind you, People Who Work On Their Porsches are in the minority in PCI I'd say, much less pull the engine's out ! Steve - what happens is, or seems to, is that the RMS (Rear Main Seal) can weep, and/or the intermediate shaft, under it. Not the end of the world. Annoying, but........livable. Think Stag engine However, the killer punch is that some - some, mind - get a condition where, the centre bore of the 3 (3 each side, remember...), can distort, or move, and the headgasket leaks. That's why looking for ominous HG signs, steam, is important. At some stage, in some of the engines, this can turn into a crack on the liner which, at some stage could just open ...the ensuing gush of coolant into the cylinder (at XXXX rpm... ! ) causes the dreaded 'hydraulic lock' (so beloved of East Galway motorists at this time ! ...and you can guess the rest. Anything from burst liners, crankcases, bent rods, smashed head, you name it. This should keep you riveted on the couch for a while............both my cars were maintained by them.......... http://www.hartech.org/docs/buyers%20guide%20web%20format%20Jan%202008%20part%204.pdf P.S. Ivan - Do you do 968's as well ? Quick! free up some money for your '5 buy an energy efficient house ! One swallow does not a Summer make....neither is it long enough to put your '5 back together....
