Yo all,
Mentioned this previously....but have been too busy to post the pics. Visited my other brother-in-law (not the SL190 owner) a few weekends ago, and he showed me his new motor - pictures below (I only had the phone with me to take the pics).
It is a 1973 (I think) version, with a 2.4L engine. It was originally a 280Z, but somewhere or other the engine was swapped for the current lump. Car was red in its original incarnation, but I think it looks good in it's current grey. It needs a bit of work (he has a new exhaust and springs waiting to be fitted - newer, fatter tyrees, are fitted and one of them is rubbing against the wheel arch if you corner quickly, or go over a speed bump). Although it is over 30 years old it still shifts like the proverbial shite from a shovel. There is no power steering, and boy do you realise how dependent we are on it in "modern" cars. There is no servo for the brakes either - so again, it is all muscle power to stop the thing. I took it for a spin along the M50, cutting off at Joe Duffy's BMW showroom exit, then back in towards Dublin - thankfully he was beside me to warn me of two speed traps - and both were operational, so we crawled past at a very sedate pace. At both spots (about 1/2 a mile apart) there were cars pulled in and tickets being written.
