€180 m? how much more could it have cost us in terms of social welfare payments to all those guys working in the industry if they had to go on the dole long term?? Not to mention the long-term damage to our exports?? The tax payer was always gonna have to pick up the tab for this one because the FSA instigated the recall, not the producers. Certainly the producers have a responsibility since it was a feed contamination that started the whole thing, the feed supplier may well have insurance but I doubt if that is gonna cover €180m.
The issues that need to be tackled now are to get consumer confidence back in the product and to ensure that something similar can't happen again... Ain't gonna be easy

They can't afford to close for a few days?
That is rubbish, those companies are profitable and should have
plenty of cash to take the hit on this.

Just do not like that they blackmailed the goverment into it.

And don't get me started on the social walfare.... :evil:
