USA maps for Satnav?
Hey gang,
I'm off to the USA in ten days & want to have a satnav for the driving. Garmin's awful website seems to say the maps (for our own satnav) are pretty pricey, so I'm thinking of getting a USA TomTom from Amazon.com. Anyone have experience of getting USA maps for a European Satnav? No more Mk1, now driving an '08 Mk3. Still fun!
Simon, You hiring a car? Check if the car rental company can supply you with one?

We're going to Cape Cod for ten days or so then Minneapolis / Wisconsin for a few days. Yeah, I looked at the options for hiring a satnav but it seems pricey. No more Mk1, now driving an '08 Mk3. Still fun!
we went to america last year and Tom Tom was just great it has the USA maps on it and we never got lost once.. fully recomend it.....
Get the top of the range Tom Tom it gives you all that you require... the USA maps are part of the package... brilliant
we drove all over the USA and drove over 3,000 miles and Tom Tom got us to just where we wanted to be with No fuss
Could you not 'get' the maps from somewhere?

You could be right, always a risk with these things.
Never tried to download maps (or anything else officer!) but it might be worth a try. I have heard that you will need a program such as bittorrent to handle the file that you find. Then search for 'garmin maps usa torrent' and click the download link in the web page that you find. it will then use bittorrent (or whatever you have) to download the file and save it to your pc.http://www.cardomain.com/ride/3099765 "When I make a key the on position and push the button, an engine works"
I got the maps in Harvey Norman Ivan
I have the Tom Tom go 910 with all the world maps including North America. I used it for France and its the "Madras Liathroid."
I have downloaded quite a few things via bittorent in the name of research and the advice I would give is this

I have Tom Tom with USA maps and they are great - however I would suggest you rent one with your car .. unless you are going to be traveling there a lot.
Our SatNav maps are 2 years old now and out of date. Seems a waste to buy a map for a holiday you might only take once every now and then. We go at least once a year - OH is from the other side of the pond! From what I can tell on TomTom's site you only have support for 12 months .. I guess this is the catch with SatNav's in general .. Or Go the "other" way and rent one if you do have probs .. prob what I would do there again, I'm a tech!
