Dell pulling out - the whole debate.
Was watching the news feeds all day about it. Sad for lots of people in Limerick aint it. Is it just me or does Cowen look spooked.......like a guy paralysed and does'nt have a feckin' clue what to do.
And don't get me going on Mary Coughlan........and as for Willie o'Dea...........Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr ohhh, and check out these great fan sites. http://www.whydellsucks.com/ and www.ihatedell.net Still, can't blame Mr.Dell, €3 an hour for a polak V's €10 to €14 to Liam from Limerick............go figure.

It's 1900 out of 2,000,000 or so working in the country.
To be fair to Dell they provided huge employment to a very depressed area for nearly 20 Years. Now they're off to do it somewhere cheaper. That's why they came here in the early 90's.
Obviously very bad news for everyone concerned, the shock wave will alas effect many many others

2 years ago I heard about the Warsaw plant...... It seems nobody here did anything about it.. It was inevitable, I'm surprised they didn't just pull it all out. My laptop I ordered last summer came from Warsaw. Some of the guys in dell have been travelling back and forth to the polish plant setting it up.
I believe this would have happened even without the recession. It seems to me the powers that be, weren't doing anything to change the situation in Limerick. That is encourage new business or attempt to change the local economies reliance on the dell plant. We'll have to wait and see how many other jobs are affected. It isn't just 1900...... +1 I've never known a time where so many friends of mine have become jobless over such a short period. As I see it, the Celtic Tiger / housing boom / government policies that supported (and yes, a majority of us voted for them) have left us with: i) infrastructure that's still behind our peers (though some poor country competitors have caught up / passed us out) ii) a very high cost economy As a result, I fear that things will have to get a lot worse before the costs of doing business in Ireland fall to a level where the country competes on an EU level. And it seems to me that Biffo & friends have no concept of how bad things are (I smell denial / emperor's new clothes). Simon No more Mk1, now driving an '08 Mk3. Still fun!
Personally i just don't think Cowen and his peers are up to the job.
Time for a General Election i think before its too late.

I'm in Dell - Limerick, but not impacted by last weeks announcement (thankfully). This move is on foot of the global downturn & not directly nor immediately attributable to Irelands woes/labour cost. The Polish plant was initially constructed to cater to increasing volume & expanding markets in central & eastern Europe, however, due to changing markets there has been a re-assessment of our business & unfortunately this is the outcome.
Its going to be a very rough ride for Ireland inc. - we aint see nothing yet & the goons at the helm appear clueless as to what if anything they should be doing. Not sure that an election is whats needed as I'm not hearing any revelatory solutions coming from the opposition any more than from those in power. We should all become civil servants & just grow the bureaucracy, enjoy the defined-benefit pension, free city parking, early retirement options, benchmarking, zero accountability & jobs for life without review & guaranteed bonus payments with career-break options.
Can't see the point in having an election, there is nobody else that can do any better. Unless you know someone?
Can't see the Government calling an election they are likely to lose either. The opposition can jump up and down all they want.
We knew what this Government was like and we voted them in anyway. Kinda got what we deserved.
You see i think we didn't have much choice.
Bertie was the creator of this mess. How the feck would he get us out of it. He presided over a government that didn’t ever have a vision or any sort of plan B for a wobble (even a tiny wobble) in the world economy to which we are so exposed to particularly America. Anyone with a brain knows you don't have a plan if you don't have a plan B.
They pumped up a bloated property bubble that burst with a bang and anyone with even half that brain would know it was never to last (never has historically in any economy anywhere in the world, Japan being a case in point like the Irish scenario in the 90's they suffered over one there) Bertie created quango's, committees for this that and the other, jobs for mates in semi state directorships and the like, took crooked money, Lied, allowed the so called financial regulator to do fuck all but sit on his olde arse and let the banks lend like money it was going outta fashion. He created junior ministries that are pointless – and serve no purpose only to keep the backbenchers happy and keep him and his FF cronies in power. He and FF allowed our competitiveness to erode fucking up all manufacturing here for the long term, they never got the proper infrastructure done (still no finished motorway system, the UK has had their since the 1960's), The health care system is a mess after pumping billions and trillions into it, the homeless on the streets with 2 in 5 houses empty in this country, I could go on and on, and on and on.........all in all, they BLEW IT! and then you hear, If Bertie was still here he'd be much better..........sweet devine! Bertie was a good time merchant, but not a crisis manager - and his prodigie Cowan is the same. Useless. Re; a new gov, well, A FG lead gov with Richard Bruton would be a good start. A labour alternative would be good to. Why should we settle for incompetent Muppets like we have?
