Cost of block-built garage, 24' x 10' ?

Postby franksm » Thu, 04 Feb 2010 1:59 +0000

Hi folks

Any builders buddies on the site here ? Looking for an estimate for construction of a 24' x 10' garage. I can help with the labouring and the only stipulations are that it have two or three windows on one side and a non-flat roof. I don't care how the blocks are finished on the outside, I will make it look pretty at some stage later. No need for any electrical work either.

I like wooden structures so was originally thinking of a timber garage like this for EUR3,000 from O'Briens in Galway. The concrete base will be extra of course.

Would be silly not to consider a block-built structure unless it's mad money compared to the O'Briens product

Thanks

Frank
PS. I am located in Lucan, Co. Dublin

Would you consider a steel cladded one Frank, with your own choice of colour?
Mine was great value for money, and they put it up* on the concrete based I prepared.

*I purposely avoided the use of the word "erection" in relation to this so as to avoid tall the usual puns

So, Ollie, how long do you think your "erection" will last??

Seriously though, Frank, Ollie's on the right track there because if you ever move house you can always dismantle the garage and bring it with you 8) and the construction is instant, the finish is complete..all you need to do is have a prepared base and electric cabling run, usually underground.

This is mine in chocolate brown, it'll take 2 cars, 1 workbench, 2 ride on lawnmowers  , lots of shelving etc.....I got a nice deal on it,made to my spec.
A local shed erector,Eamon Breen did it for me.......

Think carefullyabout the size you go for -esp the width, as this is key to how many cars you can get in there and to work on comfortably.

Just before I head back to work, Frank, you'll probably need planning permission for a permanent structure. I think that the pre-fabricated shed that Ollie's proposing may circumvent that as it's not necessarily classified as a permanent structure..check it out.

Yep, I can see where you guys are coming from and yes, if I ever took up welding, a steel structure would be safer than a wooden one, but:

a. accidentally welding car parts to the garage wall would be all too easy
b. rust might transfer from my Triumph to the garage and eat it

Check out www.shanettesheds.ie. They are based in Kilbeggan but cover the Country. Excellent construction and they can be cladded in brick effect etc. Roof is insulated and the walls can also be insulated for small cost. Just ordered a 9.6 * 16 foot garden shed from them. Slightly more expensive that a standard steel shed, however its a lifetime job and you get what you pay for. Tell them I sent you and I might get a reduction on my garden shed!!!

I worked with an Oak framed company that made orangeries, sunrooms and garages mostly for classic cars. They look amazing but the money is totally ridiculous...but look feel and smell the part.

However my point here is originally began selling these with the 'easy to erect ...blah, blah, blah line. ...broke the ice alright but rapidly changed sales line to, easy to 'assemble'!!! Roger Whittaker enjoyed it! though!

Frank, I'd say a block built garage would cost max 5,000.
Do a roam around your area see is anyone else building with a jcb on site
offer cash to do the ground work (1,000 euroish).
Buy the blocks yourself. Get a bricklayer in yourself.
Then sort yourself out with a roofer ( would be able to help there)

Ivans right, 5 k would go a long way now.
You could do the ground work yourself (feck, shure even I did), Minidigger hire is only €70 or €80 a day and you'll get the swing of being able to drive one in no time.
Re; the bricklaying, I can put you in touch with my uncle in law who's a draftsman and builder, he could sketch sommit for you I guess and cost it up if thatrs anygood.

Thanks lads, will take you both up on that as soon as I have generated a quick diagram with measurements. I have enough length (steady...) but am tight for width (quiet there at the back) so want to double-check the 24' x 10' is going to be okay.

I think the word is Girth

Seriously tho, width is everything. If my shed was 10 foot wide, I could never get 2 mx5's in there but with 14ft, it's no hassles.
