Any recomendations? advice? interesting places to go? We have the usual guide book but better to hear from fellow 5ers.

Auschwitz is within range, but I'd offer a word of caution about going there as a tourist. It is a truly terribly disturbing experience, which we should probably all expose ourselves to at some stage, but I think one needs to prepare, mentally, for going there. It's a very sobering experience and I've seen grown men visibly shaken.

On a happier note the Polish salt mines are what I remember most. Incredible caverns with carved halls and chandeliers, all etched from salt. Extraordinary.

Have a great time... Oh yes; Just remembered something else, Buffalo snaps.. a Polish vodka flavoured with herbs and 'buffalo or bison grass'...!

Suprised I remember that actually
Climbed Elbrus, Island Peak, Kilimanjaro, Elgon, Everest BC, Mulhacen, Elgon, Kayaked the Liffey to the Nile, swam the Liffey, the Lee & packed ten triathlons into a year... catch me blogging on: http://www.teenagates.com

Great spot - all-round great city
definitely do Aushcwitz/Birkenau - as Teena says, be prepared - you've see the well-known shots.. but its an un-describable experience - about 1hr by bus from city - set aside a day if doing this.
Salt mines are truly amazing - about 20 mins by local 'bus' - about 50c to get there... from centre of town - needs 1/2 day really.
Great shopping spot wrapped around central train station - puts Heuston to shame (easily done).
Old city is a great stroll-around space - also go walk-about to old Jewish quarter - incl. space used by Oskar Schindler. The castle & its environs.
Airport is not typical Ryanair - its only 20 mins by train from city centre & costs about eu1-2 for trip.

Great - thanks lads. Auschwitz first which i wouldn't leave with out going to. Salt mines as somehting fun to do after that. There'a also a Transport museum so might have to take a wander into that and an aviation museum too which could be interesting!
