na mx5 1.8 conversion?

Postby shaneh » Wed, 06 Jun 2012 9:33 +0000

my car is 93 jap import 1.6.
the list of things it needs is growing faster than i can fix them.
now it needs a 1.8 diff as the 1.6 is ruined.
needs a sump and a head gasket as of a few days ago.
its giving me way too much trouble so im thinking of buying a crashed newer nb model mx5 with lower miles and swapping
all the running gear into my 93.
i want to use the engine, gearbox, whole rear end and ecu.
is it just a case of bolting everything in or is it more complicated?
thanks,
shane

I can't speak from experience but I believe putting an NB engine into yours is a headache.
It can be done certainly but it may not be worth the hassle.
Try a Google search to see what is involved.

i asked on miata.net.
they said if its a vvti then you need a vvti controller and a few wires need lenghtening.
if it is 99 0r 00 it wont be vvti and should just go in if i swap over my pulleys and lenghten a few wires.
took the engine out today so il be looking for a cheap 1.8 soon

have 2 good 1.8's here lad.

99-00 engine the best to go for if going down the mk2 route. RS/10AE had the most power, vvt was for better low down torque and emissions but the BP5A is easier to tune. Piece of piss to put in and you only need an RPM activated switch for the VICS manifold. Way better engine .

and are the engines you have 99-00?
would you have a 1.8 diff and 2 shafts aswell?
pm me a price anyway there lad cheers.
cant just buy for a few weeks though as the mx5 is on hold for a while.
when the mx5 head gasket, sump, and diff went i bought a corolla for a run around.
i drove it 20 miles and the bottom end went. got a new engine then and finished putting it in 2 days ago.
it ran for a few seconds and the f*cking thing seized.
third engine is on its way in now but my god im sick of cars at the minute.
the joys of motoring haha

Speaking of these Mk2 (aka NB8A) engines, did the buyer of that dirt-cheap 'cooked' 10AE get such an engine replacement from you?

That seems to be the buy of the year on DoneDeals, to anyone who could access a RS 1800 engine halfcut. :)

Let me know if you are aware of anyone wanting some cash for a cheap MX5 sale / rental next month. :)

nah , one engine is the origional mk1 1.8 with exhintake mod, the other is the late mk1 1.8 with the higher comp ratio.

That would have been a nice buy for the money if it were ok. Someone will be happy.

and what kind of power would they be making compared to my old 1.6?
is an na 1.8 swap just the same job as if i was putting my 1.6 back in then,
or do i need the 1.8 ecu?

thanks for that link it sounds pretty simple.
they say to use the 1.8 intake but i wonder if that includes the 1.8 airflow meter.
could be hard to get an engine wit the exhaust and everything still on but il see if i can get it all in 1 trip

If it makes your life any easier I have a full 1.8 wiring loom and ecu. I also have the exhaust manifold for a 1.8. Yours if you want em.

have the manifold back to and including the cat . No loom ecu or MAF sensor. They were supposed to make just shy of 130 bhp and the exhintake mod gave up to 7 extra depending where you read it . Between everyone here you should be able to pick up everything but maybe a complete 1.8 might work out cheaper if it were damaged or rotten . Jap ones will have a torsen diff too.

that sounds good!
il look into it more but i dont think i need the ecu.
flyinmiata says basically swap everything electrical from the old 1.6 onto the 1.8 so i presume that includes the afm.
is the exhintake mod just an extra exhaust cam instead of the intake cam? is it enough of a lift to make the idle lumpy or to need adjustable cam gears?
i might just take that engine with the cam mod off you in a few weeks.
wont be using the diff as im just going to get a 1.8 open and weld it up.
