Timing belt 1993 mark1

Postby mazdamick » Sun, 15 May 2011 6:50 +0000

Hi all just going to replace my timing belt on my mark 1. I brought it to a mechanic to get advise and a price. He said that it would cost me €279 all in. On other cars when I got my timing belt done I also replaced the water pump. The mechanic said that there is no water pump in the 1993 mark 1! Is this correct? Also us this a good price for supply and fitting?

There is a water pump and if he says there isn't I don't think I'd trust him to do it.

Hi Mick,

You can price everything here, http://www.mx5parts.co.uk

Yes you are right to change the water pump while you are in there doing your belts, it will save you having to go back in again should something break.

It does sound very dear, perhaps you should get a few estimates for the work.

Good luck.

Mick, get one of these. Very handy and de-mystifies a lot of the basic maintenance procedures.

I am wary of attempting certain things that sometimes need doing on my car, but at least I can arm myself with some knowledge of a particular job before handing it over to someone else. If you have some mechanical skills you'll be pleasantly surprised at some of the jobs you can do for yourself.

Hi Steve thanks for the reply. I rang ken up and he has quoted me a price of in and around €430 for timing belt kit and water pump supplied and fitted. this seems to be way over priced when you price the parts on mx5 parts. I will keep on searching around. Think I wiull just get the parts myself and pay for labour.
cheers

This is typical of rip-off Ireland are they for real. The guy that said there is no waterpump is obviously not a mechanic so forget about him and the other guy is way off on his quote.
If you are anyway handy with mechanical work then a timing belt is not that difficult.Your car has a longnose crank so the only thing you need to make sure is right is the torque setting on the bolt when finished.
There is loads of good write ups on the net so check out miata.net and mx5nutz.com.Take your time and be careful on setting the timing this is cruicial as you dont want to be a tooth out on setting.Always rotate the engine a few revolutions when timing is set to make sure all your marks line up.
