I said when I got my mx I wasn't into modin it.... but starting to think of playing a little a year and a half on...

I have been thinking of changing the air filter...
1 will it make much difference?
2 is the below a good kit to buy?
3 is there another kit I should be looking at?
4 are they easy fit?
5 why have you all sucked me into this little nutty world? ;)

all advice welcome!

You may not notice a lot of difference in the cars performance, but you should find that it sounds different for starters!!

Hi Sabik,

How did you get on with the new filter?

Sounds so tempting :)

Putting an airfilter on the car on its own will make little to no difference to the performance of the car. It will make it noisier though, you'll be able to hear it suck in the air.

Although if you were to do other mods to complement the airfilter then you may start to notice an increase in performance.

Other mods could include a decat, or even a full freeflow system.

I think it was dyno proves that drilling the stock air box will give better performance than most aftermarket cone type filters and will also give you extra induction noise

Where do you drill? sounds like it might be worth a try...

Bottom of the the airbox on the cold side (just make sure its away from the exhaust and on the dirty side of the filter)
Loads of info doing it here, cant find the proof on the dyno charts that i read but will deff give you more noise.

As for the holes start maybe start with some small ones and work your way up. Easier to make it larger than smalller!!!!

As far as I remember when I read up about all of this, the restrictive part of the whole original air intake set up is the air flow meter in the crossover pipe. This is in the NB. In the NA, modifying the headlight to draw air directly from outside brought colder air in.

Getting colder air into the intake pipe was shown to make some difference - can't remember the figures. Apparently, in the NB, the location of the oem intake pipe - i.e. down low behind the headlight on the passenger side, is the best location to get air unless you want to go through the bulkhead to draw air from the lower edge of the windscreen. This location is a known higher pressure air intake point. There are good write-ups online about this. Problem is drilling and cutting a fairly large hole in the body panel here and, in my case, the abs unit is in the way.

The other location to draw air in would be through an intake pipe (flexible, like extractor fan hosing) from the front area - radiator opening or front bumper area. Some have used foglight openings to pipe air in.

I decided to replace the crossover tube and use a K&N style filter. I then built an intake box around the filter enclosing a fairly large space behind the headlight. All original plastic piping removed.

I did a not-very-scientific test at the time by using a lidl temperature probe to read the temperature inside the box and outside the box on a short run. The inside box temperatures were lower by a few degrees.

I reckoned that was enough justification for doing it.... At some stage I will insulate the box but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Can post pics if you are interested.

Hi John, I'd be interested in pics of what you did if you don't mind?
