Can anybody recommend a trustworthy garage that can repair the engine on my mk2.5 2004. It won't tick over properly and the last mechanic ripped me off and never made any progress.
I would be grateful for any recommendations.

As Robert said above, rear temp sensor (then check O2 sensor and the air intake for leaks post-MAF).

It may help if you were to say when the problem started and to list in order all the work done and what results you got.
You said that the valve stem oil seals were done, did you have the current problems ( poor tick over, running rich etc) before getting the seals done or after as they shouldn’t affect idle etc

List your faults, from first to last, what work have you had done to try to rectify the fault found s, from first to last and when( valve seals?????etc), and the result achieved.https://youtu.be/wR2f-q4WPfs
You most likely will get some good advice here but not if you don’t give all details
