Making my "homebrew" DIY custom shorty mk1 console

Postby Stig » Mon, 16 Feb 2009 10:49 +0000

Started making my DIY custom shorty console for my Mk1 this evening.
I bought an olde console for £10 from a bloke on Nutz and the plan is to do the following -

Integrate the electric window switches and cover in black leather/vinyl.

So, did a McGyver once again and modified the electric window switch box. Just had to remove 1 bracket from the box.
Then, cut/chopped/jigged and integrate it into the centre console.

Fixed it in place with an ol' reliable cable tie! McGyver never had them?

More to follow............

Right, well,
I never like the centre console in the 5. It's made of hard plastic, the lekky window switches were too far back and my elbows pushed on them, and the manky ashtrays not required by a good livin' fella like me so I took it all out for a change.

and I had more time to finish this today -

so, I sourced the leather (effect) material here :P - as you can see I went all out for the finest Quality! :D

Covered the modified console -

Fitted it into the car, and BAM!
One shorty console for about €15! Beats €180

I also lowered my headunit down in the centre dash console while I was at it for a change. I've kept the olde centre console in case I want to reinstall it, it being only a 5 minute jobbie.
All I need now is some black carpet to fit over the rest of the carpet and a flap made to cover the boot release and fuel flap levers.

for now, happy days!

Kewl stuff, Ollie.

I still recall banging me elbow off the console in the MK1......it's all a lower set-up in the MK3.
