How good are headrest speakers?

Hi,

I've got 4"x6" speakers mounted horizontally, cut into the firewall just behind the seats. For the second time they're knackered due to damp, probably my leaking rain rail. The rain rail is fixed now, and so I'm thinking of dropping another set in. Alternatively, I could fit headrest speakers (I fear the existing ones are knackered, cos they are disconnected). So, a question for you all: just how good are headrest speakers - especially the JVC ones http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info. ... cts_id/388 ?

I have the headrest speakers Simon and they are great as part of the soundsystem but certainly caouldn't take the place of the door speakers. I would have most of the power going to my door speakers with the headrest as additional sound. too much power to the ones I have anyway and they can't take the bass or I get a buzzing.

I reckon if you've sorted the damp issue. Then door speakers and ones behind you would be the way I'd go

I put Jenson 4" speakers in the passenger seat and Sony 4" in the drivers seat (they will fit with a little foam removal..)
The suppliament the fronts nicely if you fiddle with the "fade", oh and they rumble, which vibrates the seat giving the impression of v.deep bass.
I had an amp in for about a year, which meant I lost the headrest speakers, I've changed back now and def prefer it.
All IMHO ;-)

Personally I think they are brilliant  ..I have a Sony/aftermarket(type?) 2 pair in. I think the sound is v good, but I suppose they do buzz slightly when stereo is up max but that could be down to the headunit itself which is not a very dear one....

Overall I wouldnt do without them 8)

Regards.

hI Simon,
The original headrest speakers have paper cones and are probably knackered at this stage..modern uses use a type of plastic and are much more suited to the job...I saw something recently on flea bay, will look it up and post a link later.

I to have the jvc ones and agree with what has been said above re high volumes. I also have my door mids and tweeters wired to an amp in the boot and the headrest speakers running off the head unit. All works well together evn though the head unit is cheap.

Many thanks to you all for thoughts, advice & link. Must say I did like my firewall speakers - apart from the safety issues. Plenty of grunt there. Still, I don't hear very much when I'm doing 70mph, top down, and I'm hoping I'd hear more with headrest speakers. BTW I have the OEM Mazda door speakers.

Decisions, decisions...

If I wanted to have the door speakers, firewall speakers & headrest speakers all wired up I guess I'd need an amp or something, to allow me to balance them all? Don't want to take up any more boot space but I could put sth in the cubbyhole in the dash.

Oh, and I'm thinking of replacing the CD player so maybe that gives me options. Any further thoughts appreciated...
