Removable steering wheel?

Postby bloke » Tue, 10 Sep 2013 7:41 +0000

For a mk1?

Hope I'm posting this in the right place. A search didn't throw up a whole lot. Car currently has a natty nardi wheel but I'm thinking of a quick release jobbie, primarily as an anti-theft device to be perfectly honest. The car has an alarm immobiliser on it and I have a big steering lock thing (which is probably useless). But I reckon a steering wheel-less car would probably deter most off-the-cuff joyriders.

Thoughts? Recommendations?

Nice one. Mind if I ask where you picked it up? Expensive? Easy to install?

Check out ebay. I'm told that the only drawback is that the wheel does tend to extend further back towards the driver because of the snap on/off boss..alright if you're of a particular build yourself!!

Also interested in this folks. I have a simple Momo wheel which is elegant but interested in a detachable/quick release wheel for added security. With an existing Momo boss would there be much modification needed and do Momo do a detachable wheel using their standard boss?

I have one of these fitted. You also need a slim boss adaptor. I have a NRG adaptor. There is zero play in it, ie its locked firmly into place. Its very easy to fit just place the wheel on the hub and spin it until it clicks. To remove just press in the button and pull back the collar. It will bring the wheel a good bit nearer, you regain a few cm by using a non dished wheel. A good wheel is a must have for me. Mine is primarly for security, but it does make getting in and out easier. The horn also still works.

There are slim type releases. I had one but there was loads of 'play' in it.
