Condensation inside mk2 1.8se

Hi

Since the recent snow i have had condensation inside my car on the windows, it is pretty full on. During the snow the inside of the roof iced over and was soaking,its fairly dry now but there is still some dampness on it i think.

So could it be that the car is still damp and thats whats causing the problem? if so whats the best way to get rid of this dampness?

Any other suggestions welcome?

I had the same thing, water soaked into the car (in my case the seals over the doors) and into the carpet and seats. Car was full of condensation for weeks.

Problem is, it isn't getting a chance to dry out unless you can leave the car with the roof open in the sun. Or else take the seats out (5 bolts each) and dry them in the house. Simpler job than it sounds

If the carpets are wet, check behind the seats maybe there's water down there. And the boot - is it wet ?

Long term you need to find where the water got in (roof, window seals, aerial, boot seals, rear lamps, and finally the drain channels behind the seatbelt towers and the drains in the sills)

Thanks for your reply. Everything inside the car is dry, except there is some dampness left over from the previously iced roof on the inside of the roof directly above the seats. Basically during the snow it got do called that the inside of the roof became frozen, and when it defrosted it turned to water, which is now pretty dry but is still damp. So do you think that this dampness is the cause of the condensation on the windows? and if so, do you think an electric heater inside the car for a few hours would do the trick?

Yeah, that would be the cause of it alright.

A heater, a bucket of salt, or a very long drive with the heater on full - any of these will dry the car out

salt is a no no. You will never get rid of it. A few bowls of sugar will do just as good or put it in a sock.

Ive had the same problem with damp. I open the roof when ever its sunny and I tried to get a de humidifier ( gel based) but couldn't find one that wasn't salt based, so I now put the elecric de humidifier in the car at night, ( its only a small one about the size of a shoe box; I think it came from Argos).
The car seems to be as dry as a bone know !

Hi Guys,
To get rid of dampness in the air I always go to the local caravan supply shop where they sell gell based air purifiers with replacement packs. They work very well and are odourless and not expensive.

rice in an old sock works well, followed by lashings of bicarb of soda once dry to rid the car of the fusty damp smells
just sprinkle it liberally , let it sit over night..then hoover up next morning

or steam clean the carpets... it really kills all nasty whiffs

reuseable silica gel packs are the best tho
