new roof questions

Postby pat1965 » Sun, 19 Aug 2012 9:01 +0000

my vinyl soft top while not leaking is old and getting tatty and the seller advised me it is probably the original as the car was imported in 2004 ,he was the first irish owner and he has not changed it.So my questions are,
how much is a replacment?
vinyl or mohair?
new or second hand?
who to go to?
anyone down south?
can I put a glass rear window in a mark 1?
seen a few posts in the leaks section but most were fairly old so I was just wondering about up to date info.I'm in no rush as I have a hard top but any info would be very
appreciated.

Pat

I'm asking the same questions myself, and it looks like the Mk2 top just fits on the Mk1, glass window and all, mohair is much better, and new is also preferred. Jack Smith Trimmers in Swansea is the chap to go to, I'll be going there myself. At least €500 cheaper than anyone over here, even including the ferry trip........
Did you have any luck this side?

As far as I know the frame with the glass window is a different frame from the plastic window type but either will fit mk1 or mk2.Seems they fold down differently ? If you do want to fit a glass window type we have frames (vinyl is bad)for 50e.Robert 086 8226506

Definitely mohair. I've fitted (& helped fitting) 6 so far. Very time consuming but worth it as you get to clean all the spot you probably never see again (drains, rubbers, etc).
The MK2 does fit on a MK1 as Ash once took over my 'slashed' Navy mohair MK2 top, got it fixed up and fitted with no trouble to his MK1. Good luck!

I indeed have cloggys mk2 roof with glass fitted to a mk1 frame BUT I had to fit additional straps to the frame to stop the glass from sagging and to get the frame to drop correctly. company I got them from doesn't exist any more so not Sure how you'd go about if now.

I had a mk1 with a original zippered top with plastic rear window, which I fitted a mk2 glass non-zippered top to. You may even be ok without the straps mx5ash mentioned, but then you'd have to push a rear bow on the frame after pulling up the soft top, every time. So straps are the way to go.

The straps are covered in this tutorial: http://www.camsmx5.com/Resources/techtop/techtop.html

And, just to cover more of your questions, more info in another tread

sifpilsen wrote:Jack Smith trimmers in Swansea. They fit for you. Used by a lot of taxi drivers locally there. Or, order online. I found Rockmotors , http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php , they sell Robbins tops.

As well, charged_rs on here also sell soft tops.
