Swimming Pool in my boot

I haver been noticing for a while a certain dampness in the boot but on saturday I opened it to discover a large pool of water had collected.

I have cleaned out the drain holes hoping it is that but it seems to have gotten worse again. the carpet on the upper boot shelves seem dry so I can't really trace the source.

Are there any 'usual' places I should be checking.

Ariel hole and rear light seals are the to main ones to check.

sounds like a bit to much water to be condensation from
having the wrong battery.

LOL No really Ivan you couldn't get that much water into a battery. I mean there was a good two inches deep of water. I had thought I was listening to the petrol tank behind me while driving.

I'll clean off the seals and oil up the rubbers (ooh Missus) and see how she goes. Certainly if you are chasing down a leak the current weather is perfect for it

Fergal, you checked the rain rail recently for cracks or gunk?? The underside of the parcel shelf carpet would indicate if you've a problem with them??I had a problem there and the water always made it's way down to the footwell as well as the boot..just a thought

Hi FFF,

Well, I had this problem, & I found a few culprits:
1) The rain rail - this was deffo leaking, & I reckon it was running down into the boot too. Cured when Jack Smith Trimmers of Swansea put in a new rain rail sleeve around the old one (thanks Raymond) as part of my new hood fitting.
2) Using a wet battery rather than a gel one, tho' I never saw much wet in dry weather, so I'm not sure I got more than damp from this source.
3) The key-turn-lock thing: after much investigating and getting wet I discovered that water was coming in thru the hole in the wall where the boot lock turns the lever thingy that opens the boot. I gummed it the gap between the boot wall & the edge of the lock turny thing all up with silicone (have pics somewhere) & that cured it , have had a dry behind ever since!

Thanks lads. Sorted this ages ago. Problem had arisen after i got the new hood put on. I just took the rain rail etc apart at the back and did it up again. It didn't look to be done wrong initially but problem went after i put it back together.

Now if I could just sort that leak at the front

I have found a similar problem in mine, although it seems to be mainly codensation forming on the insided of the boot. My boot carpet was soaked and some magazines (car ones before you ask) had totally absorbed loads of water turning them into strange sponge-like things.

I had a remote boot release fitted in the summer and am wondering if this caused the problem but perhaps its the light seals.

could anyone with photos of fixes for these send them over or post them as I would like to try to fix the problem myself.

had that problem thought it was the battery ,it was the gaskets around the back lights,or lack of them , fitted new gaskets that sorted that

I cleared the drain holes recently and there was no real blockage. I think its probably the light seals. Is it an easy job to replace them? I assume you got them from MX5 parts?

very easy ,remove the three bolts in the rear lights.the entire cluster should pull out. there should be a large gasket around the lights .i got mine in a local mazda dealer. he ordered them in for me .i think about e14. it proberly worth changing them any way
