Gearbox rear oil seal

Postby K10 » Mon, 04 May 2009 6:15 +0000

Has anyone replaced this? I need to do it as mine seems to be weeping.

Are there any tricks to it, I presume it just takes a bit of brute force to get the gearbox tail-nut undone and that's about it.

£14 for a seal from MX5parts is a bit rich too.

Prop-shaft has to come off, that's the hardest part. Then you just pick out the old seal carefully and press in the new seal - oil the seal before you put it back in, and press it in with a socket of the right size.

Oh yeah, drop the oil out of the gearbox before starting the above :-)

I put a bit of Loctite on the propshaft bolts too when I do them up - best to be safe
