Squealing and smell like burning rubber...

Postby LittleZ » Thu, 12 Apr 2012 11:54 +0000

Please help me! My lovely 5 has a squealing sound but not all the time only occasionally but when it happens it freaks me out a bit especially when the burning smell comes, this seems to happen when I rev her a little or its consequential. My mechanic thinks I'm nutty as my 5 doesn't do it on demand. It can happen any time so not tied to cold starts etc. I was told by the previous owner the timing belt was done, I believe him as he is one of us...I'm gullible? Also does anyone have an idea how long it currently takes for the VLC to arrive, this is week 4, long, long time. I've contacted old owner, it was sent. Thanks a million for your advice and help!!

Can take 4-5 weeks depends when they posted it and there has been a load of bank hols etc so maybe longer.
Possibly the belt tension or one of the pulleys they run on. Get him to check alternator, power steering etc.
No real way to tell of timing belt is done with out taking cam cover off and inspecting. Hth

I will ask him to do these checks but he thinks I'm a paranoid woman on the loose! Thanks for the sound advice, it is common sense but when you have someone saying one thing and another on about another thing its good to know I can ask fellow 5 owners. Cheers :D
