Hello! so betty died on idle the other day and wouldn't start back up, she was lacking in power before that and had a very low idle, and would take two cranks to start her up. there was times when your start her up and she would run perfect and have full power but then wpuld go back to shit after heating up... so I need to pull error codes, now where the engine check light should be, top left of the black square, nothing lights up when the ignition comes on... so I'm gonna pull out the cluster and check the bulb.
if it's one of them check engineless models ill just have to do the whole LED rig marole, maybe anyone has the special reader i can borrow ?
Thanks in advance

Hi Folks, So bought the mx5 tech v3.1 reader and the thing is saying no faults found...dunno if that's a good thing or not.. but when I do the switch test the fan comes on and does not shut off... Dunno what to do about that.. the car still doesn't start, will need to check coils and plugs as they wouldn't throw a fault code? Maybe a faulty CAS? or would that throw a code? The fuel pump primes no problem on the tester but not when I turn the ignition on... I'm fucking confused but think next step check plugs and spark..

For any car that won’t start there’s a basic procedure to follow. 1st is, is there a spark at the plugs, 2nd, is there fuel getting to the cylinders, 3rd , is there compression in the cylinders which is unlikely to be the problem as it would need to have no compression in all cylinders to not start.
By any chance did you refuel shortly before the problem started, diesel instead of Petrol etc

As Pops said, check for spark and fuel first. Also, note the condition of the spark plug when you take it out. Is it oily black or brown ? Interestingly you mention the problem when the engine gets hot. I wonder if it's the coil pack dying ?

Hi yes swapped in a new ECU and a new coil pack and the car starts and runs smooth, except a new issue came to meet me where when I press the clutch and put the car in any gear the revs shoot up to about 2k...with the clutch still pressed in I put it back to neutral the revs drop to 1k...I give up....my head is done in...

PS: if anyone's down around Waterford and wants to hook up to an mx5 tech OBD reader, you're welcome to come around

Just a quick update on the situation, it's fixed now!! The problem was in the upper clutch switch, the spring was broken which I replaced with a pring from a pen and all is 100% just need to set the base idle and everything should be a1. Also on a different note, are magnecor leads that great to pay 100euro for them? Cheers
