leak in cooling system

Postby adamaca » Tue, 23 Feb 2010 11:53 +0000

I was driving home last night noticed the temp seemed to be running quite high somewhere around the 2/3 - 3/4 mark, when i got onto the motorway in top gear it went back to normal. I had a look when I got home and there seemed to be a leak somewhere under the plenum chamber dripping down onto oil filter and i think the altenator.

Anyone any ideas?

Could also be the electric fan - does it spin fast when the engine is hot ?

If it doesn't spin, it or its relay is bollixed.
If it spins slowly, the motor has worn bushes - the whole thing will need replaced.

I put a Kenlowe fan on mine when it started to fail - same symptoms as you describe.

Fan works fine, ive checked that. The heater doesnt seem to get really hot either.
The car car also recently had the thermostat replaced I believe, but there is definitly a leak somewhere and its dripping onto the altenator and oil filter. I wonder is it just a case of sorting the leak?

Fix leak and bleed, should get you to a good place anyway.

Bleeding = running it with the rad-cap open and allowing the air out, and massaging all of the pipes to and from the rad.
