What makes an engine hunt ??
I've sold my MK1 to my son ( which most of you by now know ! )
He's serviced it, It's going much much better than it was but it's hunting.
Any ideas ?

Funny man ............. I sold all of my four legged horses and now have the four wheeled kind much easier !!!

He changed the alternator belt
cleaned the air filter with a kit
changed the oil
put on new leads and plugs
changed the idling speed when the car wasn't up to temp ??? ( my hubby says )

Are you going to the Cork meet on Sat ??

Mel & Rhys ( my son )

probably fecked up the idle speed adjustment. Easy to do. There is a procedure for doing it involving paper clips et al....... and if its not followed you will end up with your symfony.......sorry, symptoms.............

Rhys here..

just waiting on verification for my own profile..

turns out the hunting was down to a loose connecting block on the alternator.. and as for the idle speed a only tightened the cable it was slightly slack.. didnt touch the idle screw at all...

now the speakers are bugging me... put in a new head unit and now the speakers distort when you turn it up to a reasonable level :P was told the wiring could be dodge i threw in a new set and still distorted??

that hunting is still a problem... it seems to be ok when idling most of the time but does go at it from time to time... but it always does it when im driving along.. the lights and all my electroinics flicker and the car feels like its juddering when i pull off... when i push the connecting block down it stops but im npt sure if its cuasing the whole problem... its driving me MENTAL...

If it was running fine before you serviced it and it has only got this 'hunting' issue since then with the lights/electronics dimming etc, then it could be the simplest of things - Your alternator belt is slipping

If it had this issue before the service then it's something else.

Update: Just saw your other post about the connector to the alternator - yup it's either the belt or the alternator/connection.
