hey having a problem with my clutch or gearbox in
my mk2 rs and maybe somebody here can help.
i changed the oil in the gearbox the other day put in
2litres of castrol syntec 75w90. then drove probaly 40
miles and parked up the car. came back a while later
and when i went to move the car there is a whine coming from
either my clutch or gearbox so i checked the clutch fluid
which turned out to be empty as the slave cylinder was fucked.
got my mechanic to change it today and it has made no
difference to the noise it only comes when you put ur foot
and the clutch and them will go after you take off it sounds very like
a cl;utch release bearing but when we had the car on the lift today
it sounded like it was coming from the gearbox maybe an idiler bearing.
the gearbox still has the right amount of oil and everything in it so just
wondering has anybody an idea what it might be or maybe happened
to them before i start putting in stuff that is not needed.
any help at all appreiciated
thanks
james

personally , i would change the oil again. From the rebuild manual the oil spec rec for the gear box are
API GL-4 or GL-5 allseason 75w90 or above 10'c SAE 80w90
use a performance gear oil , fuchs , mobil , shell, castrol, redline etc, not generic motorfactor stuff
there is a chance your gearbox doesnt like whatever grade of oil you put in. this will be the cheapest option plus its only 2 litres of the stuff.
it might be the spigot bearing in the flywheel or as you say the release bearing.
if its still there after changing the oil , then its off with the gearbox for new bearings, also change your release fork( these bend with racing clutches)... might aswell do the clutch while you are there.
If that doesnt fix it , its a new gearbox or try and fix your existing one.
If you need it i have the 6 speed gearbox mazda service manual.

thanks for the reply i had put castrol sytec 75w90 in in anyway which was expensive enough for 2litres i got talking to a friend last nite and he told me of a mechanic to talk to so brought the car down to him today and he says in his opinion its the spiggot bearing so going to take a chance and try this first as the clutch in the car has started to slip they odd time and was planning on getting it done. looking at installing a stage 3 f1 racing clutch as i have heard very good things about them and not madly priced either. have you any thoughts on them??
thanks
james

f1 racing clutches...hmmmm ...avoid if you can
a stage 3 would be overkill for a car without a turbo or supercharger, and not very nice to drive if its a puck type
if you want an uprated clutch an exedy stage 1 will do the job nicely

.
your engine thrust bearing wont thank you for fitting a clutch with a heavy pressure plate.

I have the exact same noise from my mk1, I've changed the clutch and release bearing though so, i'm putting it down to the spigot bearing!
