Gearbox oil level.

I want to check the oil level in my six speed MX5, how do I do this,

Brendan,there is a 24mm?? nut on the side of the gearbox approx half way between top and bottom,on the passenger side of gearbox, and if you open this when car is level it should be full to this point ( basically oil should run out this hole if overfull).The drain bung is the same size but obviously at the bottom of the gearbox.Most cars usually take approx 1/1.5 ltr,s but i am sure you would find quantity exactly in your handbook or on the net.It,s good to drain the oil and replace it with a decent quality gear oil.(not engine oil !!)And same thing with the rear diff.

Will take 2 litres of gear oil for the box and 1 for the diff if you go change them
