Hello all . I 'm in the middle of taking the rear sub frame out of my mk1 fitted with a later torsan diff ( i think). The frame , ppf ,under body etc are wet so I'm assuming that the diff is leaking , so my question is how big a job is it to replace the three oil seals , also is there a gasket /seal between the diff and the housing or is it liquid gasket that's used there . Any advice would be great thanks in advance Brian

liquid gasket for the housing and the side (axle) seals are a push fit as far as I remember

Thanks lads , that's what I figured What happens at the front seal, it seems to be a more involved job ? I must also check and clean the vent on the top ,I'm hoping it's just it that's blocked I'm assuming wd40 is the correct cleaner to use ? That's for the advice Brian

Front seal is complicated. You have to strip the bearing and then fit new crush washer and torque to correct setting. It adjust the backlash on the diff so it will bust if its too tight and very slack diff if its too loose. The washer only crushes once so new washer needed every time.Messy.Its specialist job to set up correctly

yeah... messy, involves shims too. Re Vents, wasn't I supposed to pick up 2 of those a while back? Anywho, I think what happened was that I read that they can be cleaned out with a spray of brake cleaner and they'll be good to go again.

Ya I think that was one of the plans , I removed it and cleaned it out with plenty of wd40 When I released it from the housing it let off some air pressure so that could be my problem , pressing the gear oil out ? What do people think ? Brian

Hi Brain, must be the vent blocked as there should not be pressure in the diff.Fit the side sela s and clean the vent and refit it.

Once the bolts are undone, think they just slide out, Brian. Little pray bar might help.

Thanks Dave but is that not for the 1.6 mk1 diff ,this car has a 1.8 mk1/2 lsd fitted so the half shafts aren't bolted on , they are simply slotted into the diff . I've used a couple of pry bars on them but I'm afraid of using too much force in case I Damage the housing or the shaft end . Am I simply being too much of a sissy ! Thanks for the replies Brian

It could be .. Haven't been under the car for some time now. Sure if there's no clip some sort under the rubber just give it a tug and should come out I think.

Just put in a pry bar and they will just pop out of diff. Might be an idea to take the bolts out of both rear wheel hubs so you can pull the shafts away from the diff to tap in the seals
