Can anyone suggest somewhere for this job?
........................
Hi,
I was hoping you could help me out and advice me on the best mechanic to contact around the Dublin region who would be capable of doing a head gasket/engine swap, as my girlfriends car has recently decided to die an awful death and I’m keen to bring it to someone with an experience in MX5’s.

Her Mk1 blew the pipe off the thermostat housing a year ago, overheated badly, had the head skimmed and gasket changed and is now giving us serious problems again.

Neither of us are Club members but I’m literally at my wits end dealing with inexperienced mechanics who keep ill advising me and offering to charge huge money to repair the car.

I’d appreciate if you could point me in the right direction of an experienced mechanic,

Kind regards,
Jamie.

I have used IVI a couple of times they supply, fit and offer a warranty and they are far cheaper than any main dealer.

Good news thankfully. Dropped the car to Liam Power in Dun Laoghaire to diagnose why the car was losing two liters of water a day, only to find out that the cylinders where dry and the head gasket was holding up fine. There was a pipe at the back of the engine with the tiniest pin hole in it. It took getting the engine very hot and the build in pressure before it started to squirt like crazy, and as soon as you turned engine off it would stop… hence no signs on driveway. The car has been back with us a week now and no overheating problems or loss of water.

So thankfully no new engine required or great expense incurred! If anyone is ever looking for a good mechanic with experience with MX5’s I’d highly recommend Liam Power (on the West Pier)… He’s a very thorough and honest fella… a rarity with mechanics in general!

Thanks again for all the help and advice. We greatly appreciate it! Will you pass on our thanks to the members who replied to the post too?

Regards,

Jamie.
