Postby Quinlanar » Fri, 12 Apr 2013 10:55 +0000

Im new to the whole Mx-5 thing and im currently running the wheels that came on the car i bought which are 14" wheels with 60 profile, i was thinking about getting another set with bigger alloys, so what do you guys think ? 15", 16" or 17" ? what profile to go for ? how wide can i go with the wheels ?

Is it a mk1?

I am running 15 x 8 et 15 and they required a good roll on the arches running a 195/50 tyre. Depends what look and what function you want i suppose.

14, 15 or 16 for a MK1 IMHO.
Whichever you go for try and get the lightest wheels you can afford, it makes a huge difference.

I'm sure 15" are the most popular.

Best of luck with the new 5.

Yes I think 15in is ideal or 16in MAX. 17,s are too big and cause a alot of trouble in the car with having too low a profile tyre .We have a few sets of good used alloys 14, 15 and 16 to suit.We are based in Dublin and we break mx5 only so if you need anything else.I can send you photo,s if that suits or call out and try them on.Robert

there were 17'' wheels with rubber bands on my 5 when i bought her in England. After advice from the wise and experienced on the forum here i opted for 15''s with a set of decent boots and what a transformation. Stay away from budget tyres like Wanli, Sunny etc. They'll only cost you money in the long run. I know some of us like to steer from the rear on occasion but at least with decent rubber it's controlable. With the cheap sh--e they can break loose with little warning and with very little control. Keep her lit and between the ditches.

Guys. At the risk of hijacking this post if like to ask something. I've a mk1 and I'd like to put a set of "correct" Mazda alloys in her which are 15s. I don't want an aftermarket look and I don't want wheels from a mk2/2.5 etc. I know there are white painted 15s which came with the mk1. I don't want these either. Are there other stock mk1 wheels (later mk1 stuff will do) and does anyone have a pic of them/know where I can get them?

Sry about the post hijack.

What you should really try and hunt down is a set if mazdaspeed ms-01r alloys. 15" correct fitment and offset for mx5, look great (IMO) and are light weight as well.
Not that easy to find but they do come up for sale in Uk and on mx5nutz

Yeah, wouldn't be a fan of the gold tbh, I was aware of that wheel table already...if anyone hears of stock 15s going please let me know.

They come in gold, white, silver, red and blue. Or in my case metallic gun metal. :-)
