Help - lost car keys!

Postby annetcl » Mon, 31 Mar 2014 9:41 +0000

Hi there - I bought a used mx5 mk2 two years ago but it only came with one key. Looks like I may have misplaced the only key that I have - I feel really foolish now having procrastinated making a duplicate :( Do any of you guys know if I would be able to order a key from one of the authorised mazda dealers without a spare? Hope you can help and thanks in advance!

I think they can if you supply proof of ownership + your vin number (might be more difficult if your car is an import though).

Hi Steve - thanks for your reply. Its an Irish model so hopefully it will be easier. I might give a few dealers a try. Do you or anyone on the forum have a dealer in Dublin they would recommend? I might give Autokey.ie a buzz too.

Lock Doctor are good at this. Tell them your story they might be able to help. They have few branches around the country so shouldn't be a problem to get to you. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Thanks David - will call them too. Hopefully I can find the most cost effective solution. Will provide an update when I get this solved for the benefit of other members :)

Best of luck with that! My car came with only one key as well. Should consider getting a second one.

I've not dealt with many dealers (I've an import) so can't recommend any I'm afraid.

@davith501, I had a spare cut by Woodies.

8e as far as I remember, it was just a generic key.

If its Irish car it will have immobiliser built in and sad to say it costs about 1200e if you have NO keys as they cant copy what you dont have and dealers can only fit new ECU ,immobiliser unit and keysn (all a married set ) plus programming and labour ( 1800e) but we may have ecu, matching immobiliser and matching keys to suit.Parts are about 250e plus a bit of labour.Check your options but personally I think your in trouble.!!.Now if it was jap import any key will do as longs as it opens the locks themselves ( no immob ) (only aftermarket ones). 086 8226506

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I have to thank my lucky stars as someone picked up my keys (which I apparently dropped) after I parked my car in the apartment's garage. I will be off to make a pair sharpish now! But I did in fact call a dealer/lockdoctor and autocheck. The dealer, Park Motors quoted €320 to order me a key (provided I bring proof of ownership to the dealership) but to get the key coded I would have to tow the car to the dealership. Lockdoctor quoted between €250 to €300 to call over and provide me with a key. Autokey quoted €250 for the same service, €300 if I wanted an additional key - in case someone needs this information for future reference.
