Here's my shortcut guide to reinstalling the leveller on the MX5 NC without removing the bumper, based on what I learned. It’s not foolproof but well worth a go.
1. Put the car facing a white wall or similar where you can see the headlights projected
2. Take the leveller all the way out of the headlight (you may need to move the fusebox / washer reservoir to do so). No need to disconnect the electrics.
3. Unscrew the levelling bolt almost all the way so the little plastic box is at the far end of the bolt, with a couple of threads still visible beyond it.
5. Identify the 2 barbs, one on each side of the plastic box. They're what connect the leveller to the headlights.
6. Position the leveller with the box horizontal, & the 2 barbs on the 2 sides. At the same time align the 3 locking pins at the head end of the leveller i line with the recesses in the headlight into which they fit (look at the other headlight if you need to see the final orientation).
7. Push the leveller in thru the 3 locking pins until it fits in & then clicks (that's the little barbs getting caught behind the rectangle into which it slots). Don’t force it, if it won’t go in, remove it & realign it. Be patient.
8. Lock the leveller in place by twisting it.
9. Now the leveller should be holding the headlights in place.
10. Check it by turning the headlights on & turning the little 8mm plastic bolt head so the nut moves INWARDS - that's tightening the bolt - which pulls the plastic box down the bolt, towards the rear of the car, and thereby pulls headlight the beams downwards.[/list]
If this doesn't work, plan B is to remove the bumper & headlight.
