MX5 Season

Postby Cyborg » Sat, 20 Jan 2018 11:14 +0000

Looking forward to getting my MX5 on the road but only plan on taxing it for 6 months of the year,
wondering which 6 months are the best! march to aug, april to sept or may to oct?
What do you do?

Hi, you can only declare it off road in two ways. One way is when you first register it in your name, the other is that the car has to be currently taxed and you declare it off road before the tax runs out, either way , the minimum period is three months at a time which can be extended before the three months runs out but you can go back on the road at any time but the car has to be taxed from the 1st of the month . You could just do it for the first three months and decide before the time is up if you want it back on the road, if not , just extend the off road for another three months

Thanks , yes I declared it off the road when I bought it, needs a few small jobs done and an NCT,
just wondering when's the best time to get the most use out of it.

Hi Cyborg,
We put the car on the road from May to end of October. The weather can be better in the autumn than some of the summers we've had lately. She is garaged for the winter (I would not be happy leaving out in the open for six months).
Basically it comes down to what suits you. There might be events you want to attend in April..?

How do you get an insurance just for six months?

You don't, so you could insure for 12months and tax for 6. Classic Insurance is usually mileage limited so you may reach your say 300mile limit in 6 months anyway.

I have garage policy but I never heard of anyone being actually asked the mileage.?? Or checked for that matter!! I presume if serious crash happened then the insurance may check mileage but obviously they would have to have record of mileage before insurance started , previous year

There might be some type of character, no names no scandal, who would use two different speedos with similar mileage to extend their cover....

just sayin'

Not that I'd condone that sort of thing........

As said above, I don't think they (insurance) ever check.....at least I've never been asked for anything in relation to this.

I seem to remember Autoline asking what mileage the car had when I took out the original policy but can’t recall them asking since

They've asked me previously (once I think) but never asked for evidence.
