Gave Stripey a quick wash, then a 60km drive. Felt great. And the now €56 yearly tax added to the experience!!!

I have the car 9 yrs and it was pretty rough & unloved when I got it, only catching up to all these odd jobs jobs now. we have 2nd kid due in July so trying to get a few jobs doing before that put the brake on the projects. Will keep ye updated otherwise. The original owner got in touch a couple of years ago and wanted to see the car again, so I'm trying in my head to get it as presentable & drivable as possible before I do that, he doesn't want it back or anything but was very happy to hear it was still in the road and getting looked after.

edit
I have the passenger side front suspension stripped now too, ball joint are some bugger to break free. Will start cleaning up the arms next and get old bushes out next.

i tried to pull the front end control arm bushing out last night, went with the threaded bar method.

https://youtu.be/zVgOLvjCOW8

The internet said it was easy, of course it was. Was too much for the impact gun to manage and I stripped some bars too. I ended doing two by hand with the breakers bar. half a turn at a time. I did 2 of 8 bushs in 90mins last night........
Anyone got an easier method >? i might just ask a garage to break them out on their press,

To help removing the old bushes you can use a wood drill bit to drill through the perished old rubber to weaken them and clean up the remaining rubber that has welded itself to the wishbones with a hacksaw blade, use lots of grease on the threaded bar as the tension will strip the threads. Looking at your picture, you need to keep everything in line when trying to remove the old bushes, looks like your trying to pull it out sideways.
Edit, I just looked at the pic again, it might have been taken after removal, keep up the good work.
Found a vid, might help https://youtu.be/P7PvxtVLTKs

The picture is one I got thru ok, the middle bar is just a bit of iron I used as a stopper for the end nut, the first couple of attempts with an aluminum bit just folded in on themselves

On further analysis looks like the extreme effort in removing was likely caused by this ridge of surface rust & bubbling. It came straight off with one pass of a dermal & grinding wheel.

good to know!
I've melted some out in the past with a small blow torch, its messy and smelly though.
Since then I've just brought them and some beer to a garage with a press.

Put Stripey through the NCT and got a TWO year ticket. That, and €56 a year road tax has made ownership all the more enjoyable!

Good to get the 2years nct, did you have to explain that it is now in the vintage class or did they recognise it themselves?
I went for my test last night but they wouldn't test it, he said i was too early for the appointment,,,, by a week, idiot

So, in preparation for the test tomorrow night I gave it a 100km spin, drives well but feels harsh on the road, all new bushes etc but tyres are at 26psi, anyone using less pressure?
Connemara still looks good Image

Original radio lights up nicely even though it is pretty useless even with a band expander

Passed the NCT no bother except the advisory for age of front tyres, anyway, will be interesting to see what they say in two years time

Thanks Len, 2 years test now so happy days. Took a long time to find the original radio and to be honest I only wanted it for originality as everything else is more or less original (ish), dont normally listen to it but I'm thinking of replacing it with a modern one with sat nav etc
