Roadster of the year (again!)

Just got a copy of this months CBG New Car magazine, and they have their “New Car Honours” listed – with no surprise that the MX5 won “Roadster of the Year”……

Year after year the MX5 keeps cropping up as the best Roadster across various different countries and publications, and there is no exception here. It might not be one of the most powerful cars around, but it certainly is one of the most enjoyable to drive, and now it comes with a choice of soft-top or folding hardtop – and the latter doesn’t mess with the weight or handling at all. MX-5s will be reliable, they hold their value better than anything this side of a Mini and they are incredibly easy to live with. It was close this year, but the fact that Mazda can still beat Porsche in this category is a measure of just how right it got this car.

Ivan – fear not – the Boxster was in second place….but only by a whisker:

Price is probably the only main obstacle to the Boxster’s success, as if it were more accessible it would probably walk away with this category. It is still the roadster to choose if you have more cash to spend, and it really is a car that just gets better………

3rd was the Nissan 350Z Roadster.

The thing is, if you take a Roadster and add in extra power (be it a Turbo or Supercharger), which is what the roadster engine CAN take WITHOUT modding, it will kick any Porsche....except on a straigth road that is a few kms long.
And remember, the original 'Porsche sports car' was DESIGNED FOR WOMEN  It was on Discovery Channel !!!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.. A true roadster is a vehicle designed as such from the word go, not a convertible version of a hard top car?? how does this apply to the 350z??

It's convertible because there is a hard top version, which came out first.

Wikipedia Definition........

A roadster, also known as a spyder or spider, is a two-seater car, traditionally without a roof (or with a detachable roof) and no side or rear windows. Modern day two-seaters commonly have windows and feature retractable roofs (and are thus convertibles). While retractable soft-tops are still marketed as roadsters/spyders, retractable hard-tops are commonly designated as coupe roadsters.

Also
noun
n. (1) A small lightweight carriage; drawn by a single horse

but that only covers 1.6 models........
