 From Mazda.ie:
"The Mazda RX-8 is no longer available in Ireland.
Due to continued analysis of Mazda Motor Ireland's product line up, the Mazda RX-8 has been deleted from the new vehicle range."
Gormley, you've made me angry. Very angry
And you won't like me when I'm angry

Neighbour has a silver one of these and have to say its a fabuloue looking car - but seems to spend most of its time either in the garage or in his drive with the bonnet up - with starting problems

They're not a car you'd use to nip over to the shops. Engine needs to warm up properly to avoid the flooding problems Steve mentioned, a problem which can lead to premature wear of the rotor tips.
I was seriously tempted last week, there were 2 on Carzone for under 6 grand, both on Irish plates. I was going to ring up about one of them yesterday, but it's gone.

The new emissions based tax system result in an annual tax bill of €2000 for the RX-8. Cars registered prior to that are cheaper to tax than my '5. I suspect thats why Mazda withdrew the car. The problem with buying one now is that the clowns in Leinster house will probably target the motorist again in January to make up the shortfall from their botched attempt at a budget, and a 284 g/km car will be hardest hit.

€2,000 annual car tax???? are you serious? What do the rotors chop trees while you drive or something. That's outrageous.

They guy I work with has one, it's absolutely brilliant to drive, the engine is like nothing I've ever driven, it pull the same at 1000rpm as 8000rpm, it just keeps on accelerating, I LOVED IT.

I read recently in EVO magazine that the older model (RX-7) needs an
engine rebuild every 60k miles. Is the RX-8 the same ?

No, they solved that problem with the Renesis engine in the RX8.
It does need to be looked after though. Wankel engines are a bit more finnicky than the standard

Considered getting one when ordering the MX5, they had a beautiful red car with black'n'red leather in the showroom - drove both, but preferred the 5. I felt you had to cane the RX8 to make it do anything. Had read about starting problems and asked the salesman for his honest opinion on this - surprisingly he admitted that unless fully warmed the engine is likely to refuse to start. I told him I often tend to drop the kids off at school (1km away) and he told me that if I drove that far, stopped the engine, then it wouldn't start again. Also said they had a thirst - not just for petrol, but for oil. Loved the look and the interior - and of course the practicallity of the four doors (the girls did their best to convince me this was the one to go for...). real shame they are withdrawn from the market. 2k a year for road tax is absolutely scandalous....as you've said before Ivan, the sports car is dead (in Ireland anyway).
