It seems to be a buyers market at the moment, you can pick up a rough 5 in the UK for under £1000 now. My advice is to buy based on condition, not based on year/miles.

Are you looking for a MK1 or 2? What is your budget, are you looking for something modified or standard?

Hello there Sabik and welcome. Right now, as K10 said ,the world's your oyster as there are a lot of 5's out there on the market.
One piece of advice is keep an eye out on the particular model you're buying. Issues about insurance are rearing their ugly head in relation to "Jap Imports" which we feel is a load of crap, but that's how it is.

Have a look on www.carzone.ie and don't be afraid to try out different models.
Where are you located? Maybe you could get to one of our gatherings and have a look at some options and get some friendly pointers???

Welcome Sabik,

As the guys say , plenty of choice out there at the moment and take loads of test drives. Bargain hard on any potential car you're interested in and you will get a great deal no doubt.

Also do some research on your insurance costs...you might get a shock from some quotations.

Best of luck.

Regards John.

Hi Sabik,

welcome. There are several things I reccomend you look at.
1. If you are not mechanical minded, see if you can bring a machanic or someone from the club (maybe put your location with your name and someone in your area might be able to assist as 'the expert')
2. check for damp carpets and look under the carpart to see if there is any damage caused by the damp. the reason why there is damp could be very simple. blocked drain holes (unblock with a metal coathanger & brush), cut in roof, etc)
3. I am not strong mechanically, but there are people here who are... ask them. again location wuld be could as you could arrange to meet up en they can show you on their car the areas what to look out for.

good luck hunting and hope to see you soon in your very own '5

Hi welcome to the forum. As said there is loads around to choose from at the moment so the best advice would be take your time.
Indeed the waterford/wexford run will be in your neck of the woods during the weekend so if you have not got something by then then it could be a good chance to have a look at some "great" examples.
Myself, Dave and Steve are all localish to you and without speaking for the others I would be happy to meet up with ya sometime if your interested in having a look (although i have a mk1)
And if you are interested in a car post up here and pretty sure someone local to it would be happy to meet up with you and have a look.
Any questions just ask on here.
Any other ideas on what model you would like, Special editions and such and in around that year would....

Hi guys, Had a look around... and bought today... Took it for a good spin and happy enought...

How I've payed for it the trouble will surely start...

I'm fairly handy with my hands so serviceing and a few jobs won't bother me.. But don't think I've to many... Roof clean, floor dry.. pads were a bit rusty from sitting up a while(thats gone now!).. so all in all I'm happy enough for the min..

Oh is it normal that it rains as soon as you want to take it for a spin? (the weekend is looking ok, so fingers crossed might get a nice run.. 8)

here she is! She's(if it right to say that!) the base model 1.6... nothing much extra.. Basic just the way I wanted it..

Wanta do the timeing belt and full service.. timing belt I might get done and the rest I hope to do myself...

Have only been for a little spin today but, might go for a blast now.. Just to clear out some of the cob wedds...
