Holiday in southern Ireland?

Postby Shadowchaser » Tue, 07 Apr 2009 10:19 +0000

Hi guys, a mate and I are thinking about coming over to Ireland for a camping/fishing holiday next year and we want to drive down to southern Ireland and find a nice camp site etc. We are going to drive/ferry/drive over with our 5's. Anyone got any ideas of a nice area/place to stay? Also would be great to meet up with some of you guys for a run while we are there.

Would appreciate any advise.

Thanks!

Shadow,

if you want to go fishing in Eire, go to County Cavan. 365 lakes, one for every day in the year.

http://indigo.ie/~lisac/ is just 1 example.
pm me for more details if you like. I've fished and I'm from the lakelands of Ireland.

Rgds,
O

West Waterford (lismore)/north cork (fermoy) are supposed to be good for fishing too.
To be honest there is a load of places to come over here and stay and we have a member in nearly every county who I'm sure would be willing to advice on ocal places to go etc. keep us posted and we will organise a spin around ya for sure.
Be good to see your car in the metal.

Hi

I'm from mid south-west, at the lower end of Lough Derg. Not into it myself, but locally there is some excellent fishing. Best bet for this area is to contact the local expert - http://www.tjsangling.com/index.html

Thanks for all the help and advise guys!

Course fishing and some fly fishing would be great! And camp sites! We will be bringing tents with us to rough it for a week as it's cheaper and more fun anyway. So camp sites with course/fly fishing near to the camp site would be great.

Thanks again for your help. Look forward to meeting some of you next summer.

I know I could look up camp sites and fishing over there myself but I thought someone on here might live locally and know of the best places hence me asking :D

Coming From Austalia you'll probably find that Ireland is quite a small place, in fact it is. But there is a huge diversity here also. You will quite easily find plenty to keep you occupied and as you're taking a driving holiday you'll cover the whole country in no time at all.Keep us informed of progress on your plans and feel free to ask any questions..you'll be made very welcome when you get here

Hi Roland

Ok well I can beat all their suggestions. South west Ireland in Kerry and Cork not only have the best fly fishing but also the best roads for fives. You need a day or two on the Lakes of Killarney (my home town) and thankfully the road you need to use is Molls gap. This is a rally stage. This then leads onto places like the healy pass and Kenmare etc. There are at least 3 camp sites in Killsrney if not more. Let me know if you need more info.

Permits are needed but they are cheap. Depending what time of year you come depends on your flys and catch here. My Dad does tours on the lake and can take people to all the best spots. He's been fishing for over 50 years here!! The may fly should be out soon I think, makes the fish here go gaga..! Also great salmon fishing here..

Hi Roland,

The words above are written in gold !
Killarney is one of the (if not THEE) best places to go when down south, it has it all :thumright:

I live in Cork but have been going down to Killarney since I was a toddler, and I know West Cork like the back of my hand (which is covered in spray paint right now).

Driving - You HAVE TO run Molls Gap and the Healy Pass !
Let us know what dates you are thinking of as all of us here in the south (and other parts) that have taken those runs WILL do it again - I can see another Killarney run in the making here......Fla, will you take the lead again man for this one if it happens ?

What type of course fish do you want to catch BTW ?
I know a place that's free to fish, it has roach, rudd, a few carp, pike and sea bass (depending on the date).

BTW - To fish in Ireland for Salmon & Sea-Throuth you'll need a government permit which is country wide, some fishing 'hot spots' have that already added into their permit for fishing in club waters.

Also, do you want a 'relaxing' holiday or some 'party' life at the weekend etc ?
Fergus
